The development of modern measurement methods for ship systems results from economic changes and increasingly stringent environmental requirements. Additionally, the specificity of ship systems and the conditions in which they work lead to very restrictive requirements for the reliability and accuracy of measuring systems on ships and offshore facilities. This collection presents the results of research related to the development of modern systems on ships and offshore facilities, with a particular focus on the measurement and assessment of processes occurring in ship propulsion systems, ship navigation systems, maritime communications, maritime safety and alarm systems, marine cargo-handling equipment, offshore technological systems, etc. This book addresses all types of sensors and measurement systems designed for ships and offshore facilities.

The volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) nature of environmental and operational conditions is still the major cause of marine accidents, with knock-on effects in terms of casualties, property damage, and marine pollution. Recognized as the most effective approach to navigate VUCA environments, risk-based assessment methods provide a solution to address challenges associated with health, safety, and environmental protection in extreme conditions and when accidents involving engineering structures and infrastructure occur. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to the foundational principles, current practices, and cuttingedge trends in quantitative risk assessment and management for ships and offshore structures. With six parts encompassing a total of 35 chapters, it covers risk assessment and management for offshore installations, oil and gas leaks, collisions and grounding, and fires and explosions. Tailored for ship and offshore structural engineers, naval architects, as well as mechanical and civil engineers involved in advanced safety studies, this book is an invaluable resource for both practicing engineers and researchers in this field. • Offers insights into quantitative risk assessment and asset management for ships and offshore structures in extreme conditions and in the event of accidents • Equips engineers with valuable statistical data sets and enhances data assimilation techniques for precise hazard frequency calculations • Seamlessly integrates fundamental principles with practical applications, addressing emerging challenges and leveraging the latest technological advances in the field

Two previous NATO Advanced Study Institutes (ASI) on berthing and mooring of ships have been held; the first in Lisboa, Portugal in 1965, and the second at Wallingford, England in 1973. These ASls have contributed significantly to the under standing and development of fenders and mooring, as have works by Oil Companies International Marine Forum (1978) and PIANC (1984). Developments in ship sizes and building of new specialized terminals at very exposed locations have necessitated further advances in the combined mooring and fendering technology. Exploration and exploitation of the continental shelves have also brought about new and challenging problems, developments and solutions. Offshore activities and developments have in fluenced and improved knowledge about both ships and other floating structures which are berthed and/or moored under various environmental conditions. The scope of this ASI was to present recent advances in berth ing and mooring of ships and mooring of floating offshore structures, focusing on models and tools available with a view towards safety and reduction of frequencies and consequences of accidents.

This book offers state-of-the-art developments in the collision and grounding of ship and offshore structures. The topics covered by the contributions include: dynamics of vessels in collision and grounding; collision and grounding in Arctic conditions; collision and grounding statistics and measures of the probability of incidents; risk assessment of collision and grounding; measures for reduction of collision and grounding, machine learning methods for the evaluation of probabilistic collision and grounding risk; new designs for improvement of structural resistance to collisions; analysis of ultimate strength of damaged ship structures; design of buffer bows to reduce collision consequences; innovative navigation systems for safer sea transportation, collision between ships and offshore structures; collision between ships and fixed or floating bridges, collision and grounding experiments; properties of materials under impact loadings; residual strength of damaged ships and offshore structures; hull girder response of ships under severe dynamic loadings. The book is aimed at naval architects, marine engineers and scientists. The ICCGS conferences aim to present state-of-the-art methods for analysis and design against collision and grounding of ships, collisions between ships and icebergs, offshore structures, bridges, submerged tunnels and waterfront structures. Previous conferences were held in: San Francisco, USA in 1996; Copenhagen, Denmark in 2001; Tokyo, Japan in 2004; Hamburg, Germany in 2007; Helsinki, Finland in 2010; Trondheim, Norway in 2013; Ulsan, South Korea in 2016, and Lisbon, Portugal in 2019. The Proceedings in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering series is devoted to the publication of proceedings of peer-reviewed international conferences dealing with various aspects of ‘Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering’. The Series includes the proceedings of the following conferences: the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM) Conferences, the Marine Structures (MARSTRUCT) Conferences, the Renewable Energies Offshore (RENEW) Conferences and the Maritime Technology (MARTECH) Conferences, and the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore Structures (ICCGS) conferences.
