The marriage and death notices compiled in this publication are not limited to Southeast Alabama, as many entries are from states and counties surrounding Barbour County, Alabama, particularly Georgia. Georgetown, in Quitman County, Georgia, across the Chattahoochee River from Eufaula, Alabama, was a very popular place for young couples to marry and it was known as the "Gretna Green" of southeast Alabama. The courthouse records of Quitman County were lost by fire in 1921. Dale County, Alabama records were lost in 1885. Much important information on families can be found in old newspapers.--Foreword, p. [iii].

Searching for your Alabama ancestors? Looking for historical facts? Dates? Events? This book will lead you to the places where you'll find answers. Here are hundreds of direct sources--governmental, archival, agency, online--that will help you access information vital to your investigation. Tracing Your Alabama Past sets out to identify the means and the methods for finding information on people, places, subjects, and events in the long and colorful history of this state known as the crossroads of Dixie. It takes researchers directly to the sources that deliver answers and information. This comprehensive reference book leads to the wide array of essential facts and data--public records, census figures, military statistics, geography, studies of African American and Native American communities, local and biographical history, internet sites, archives, and more. For the first time Alabama researchers are offered a how-to book that is not just a bibliography. Such complex sources as Alabama's biographical/genealogical materials, federal land records, Civil WarÂ-era resources, and Native American sources are discussed in detail, along with many other topics of interest to researchers seeking information on this diverse Deep South state. Much of the book focuses on national sources that are covered elsewhere only in passing, if at all. Other books only touch on one subject area, but here, for the first time, are directions to the Who, What, When, Where, and Why.

“Births, Deaths, and Marriages of Marion County Alabama” are the extractions of the births, deaths, and marriages that were found in the early Marion County Alabama newspapers. The first newspaper on record for Marion county was the Marion County Herald, which began in 1885. A fire in 1887 destroyed those early issues. However, the remaining issues, along with other newspapers of Marion County including The Hamilton Times, The Guin Dispatch, The Guin Gazette, Hamilton Free Press, Hamilton News Press, Hamilton Appeal, Guin Gazette Appeal, Winfield Enterprise, Marion County Democrat, and The Marion County Republic, have been transcribed and the listing of all births, deaths, and marriages have been extracted out and arranged in alphabetical order (there is also an index in the back of the book). These were transcribed the same way they were presented in the newspaper. Please note that the amount of information may vary from one entry to another.
