The American fixation with marriage, so prevalent in today's debates over marriage for same-sex couples, owes much of its intensity to a small group of reformers who introduced Americans to marriage counseling in the 1930s. Today, millions of couples seek help to save their marriages each year. Over the intervening decades, marriage counseling has powerfully promoted the idea that successful marriages are essential to both individuals' and the nation's well-being. Rebecca Davis reveals how couples and counselors transformed the ideal of the perfect marriage as they debated sexuality, childcare, mobility, wage earning, and autonomy, exposing both the fissures and aspirations of American society. From the economic dislocations of the Great Depression, to more recent debates over government-funded "Healthy Marriage" programs, counselors have responded to the shifting needs and goals of American couples. Tensions among personal fulfillment, career aims, religious identity, and socioeconomic status have coursed through the history of marriage and explain why the stakes in the institution are so fraught for the couples involved and for the communities to which they belong. Americans care deeply about marriages—their own and other people's—because they have made enormous investments of time, money, and emotion to improve their own relationships and because they believe that their personal decisions about whom to marry or whether to divorce extend far beyond themselves. This intriguing book tells the uniquely American story of a culture gripped with the hope that, with enough effort and the right guidance, more perfect marital unions are within our reach.

Gavin Newsom has been a force in California politics since the 1990s, having acquired power through the machinations of his family and friends. As mayor of San Francisco, his Hollywood mystique and historic progressive policies meant that he could do no wrong—even when he was caught having an affair with his secretary, who also happened to be his friend’s wife. Eventually, however, Newsom’s brazen pursuit of power caused even the Left to sour on him, forcing him into the purgatory that was the lieutenant governor’s office. But suave, cocky, and unrelenting, Newsom soon claimed the governorship, where he was free to insert woke policies into every aspect of Californians’ lives. With Jennifer Siebel Newsom, his glamorous but scandal-ridden “first partner,” at his side, Newsom has pushed California leftward into a dirtier and more dangerous version of itself—and positioned himself for his ultimate goal: the White House. This account probes Newsom’s life and influence, addressing the homelessness crisis, COVID lockdowns, the recall, the education wars, and his combative relationships with Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump, while also shedding new light on issues like his relationship with a teenager as mayor, his New Age wedding, and his financial scandals. As a result, the real Gavin Newsom is uncovered—the one behind the veil of media adoration.

This major reference work is the fourth volume in the series "Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages". Its intention is to update the French and Occitan chapters in R.S. Loomis’ "Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages: A Collaborative History" (Oxford, 1959) and to provide a volume which will serve the needs of students and scholars of Arthurian literature. The principal focus is the production, dissemination and evolution of Arthurian material in French and Occitan from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Beginning with a substantial overview of Arthurian manuscripts, the volume covers writing in both verse (Wace, the Tristan legend, Chretien de Troyes and the Grail Continuations, Marie de France and the anonymous lays, the lesser known romances) and prose (the Vulgate Cycle, the prose Tristan, the Post-Vulgate Roman du Graal, etc.).

Dan and Jeremiah are the leaders of the two churches marked for destruction by the dark kingdom. The unseen powers use sophisticated spiritual weapons and devices to monitor, ensnare, weaken, and turn key members and leaders of these churches away from the faith. The enemy’s most deadly weapon is the saint’s ignorance of the battle going on around them. Many become captives by the voice of the enemy through the weapons of thought suggestions and mind control, while others fell through the caprices of their unbridled desires, wants and secret passions. In the middle of these intense battles is an ally who responds to the faintest stir of faith and cry for help. Spiritually gripping, Soul Reapers is a supernatural apocalypse story that remains with you. Watch out for those thoughts, they might not be yours!

Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is one of Germany's greatest writers. His agile mind and brilliant wit expressed themselves in lyrical and satirical poetry, travel writing, fiction, and essays on literature, art, politics, philosophy and history. He was a biting satirist, and a perceptive commentator on the world around him. One of his admirers, Friedrich Nietzsche, said of him: 'he possessed that divine malice without which perfection, for me, is unimaginable.' Heine was conscious of living after two revolutions. The French Revolution had changed the world forever. Heine experienced its effects when growing up in a Düsseldorf that formed part of the Napoleonic Empire, and when spending the latter half of his life in France. The other revolution was the transformation of German philosophy in the wake of Kant: Heine explained this revolution wittily and accessibly to the general public, emphasizing its hidden political significance. One of the great ambivalences of Heine's life was his attitude to being a German Jew in the age of partial emancipation. He converted to Protestantism, but bitterly regretted this decision. In compensation, he explored the Jewish past and present in an unfinished historical novel and in many of his poems.
