In the spirit of Hunter Thompson’s Hell’s Angels and Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, a first-person account of a booming California business: weed When Californians voted on Proposition 19—the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act—in November 2010, many expected the state to become the first to fully legalize a Schedule I drug. After all, the pro-legalization movement had huge popular support, medical marijuana was already legal, and, well, pot was the state’s biggest agricultural money-maker. Tax revenues would be enormous, the legal system relieved, new jobs created—it seemed like a no-brainer. But Prop 19 was not only defeated, it was crushed, and the opposition was driven not by Arnold Schwarzenegger or Mothers Against Drunk Driving—but by the marijuana growers themselves, who launched a major campaign to keep their product illegal. Why? To find out, journalist David Rose went beyond the Redwood Curtain of Northern California—seat of the clandestine pot-farming industry and the country’s largest guerilla economy—and what he discovered was not only eye-opening, but, at times, heart-breaking and, at other times, terrifying. California’s famed pot farmers, it seems, are not the peaceful, laid-back hippies you might imagine. From the Hardcover edition.

This is a celebration of running, and what lots of us think about when we run. Part escape, part self-discovery, part therapy, part fitness. Part simple childlike joy of running when you could be walking. Vassos Alexander shares the highs and lows of falling in love with running, from his first paltry efforts to reach the end of his street to completing ultra marathons and triathlons in the same weekend. Each of the 26.2 chapters also features a fascinating insight into how others first started, from Paula Radcliffe to Steve Cram, the Brownlees to Jenson Button, Nicky Campbell to Nell McAndrew. Funny, inspiring, honest - the perfect read for anyone with well-worn trainers by the door (or thinking of buying a pair...).

Figurativity has attracted scholars’ attention for thousands of years and yet there are still open questions concerning its nature. Figurativity and Human Ecology endorses a view of figurativity as ubiquitous in human reasoning and language, and as a key example of how a human organism and its perceived or imagined environment co-function as a system. The volume sees figurativity not only as embedded in an environment but also as a way of acting within that environment. It places figurativity within an ecological context, and approaches it as a phenomenon which cuts across bodily, psychological, linguistic, social, cultural and natural environments. Figurativity and Human Ecology will appeal to those interested in the analysis of the all-encompassing creativity of the human mind and in the methodological difficulties associated with the study of cognition.

* 2020 Nomo Awards Shortlist for "Best Novel" * A Best Book of 2019 —LitReactor, Entropy Triangulum is an ambitious, often philosophical and genre-bending novel that covers a period of over 40 years in South Africa’s recent past and near future—starting from the collapse of the apartheid homeland system in the early 1990s, to the economic corrosion of the 2010s, and on to the looming, large-scale ecological disasters of the 2040s. In 2040, the South African National Space Agency receives a mysterious package containing a memoir and a set of digital recordings from an unnamed woman who claims the world will end in ten years. Assigned to the case, Dr. Naomi Buthelezi, a retired professor and science-fiction writer, is hired to investigate the veracity of the materials, and whether or not the woman's claim to have heard from a “force more powerful than humankind” is genuine. Thus begins TRIANGULUM, a found manuscript composed of the mysterious woman’s memoir and her recordings. Haunted by visions of a mysterious machine, the narrator is a seemingly adrift 17-year-old girl, whose sick father never recovered from the shock of losing his wife. She struggles to navigate school, sexual experimentation, and friendship across racial barriers in post-apartheid South Africa. When three girls go missing from their town, on her mother's birthday, the narrator is convinced that it has something to do with "the machine" and how her mother also went missing in the '90s. Along with her friends, Litha and Part, she discovers a puzzling book on UFOs at the library, the references and similarities in which lead the friends to believe that the text holds clues to the narrators’s mother's abduction. Drawing upon suggestions in the text, she and her friends set out on an epic journey that takes them from their small town to an underground lab, a criminal network, and finally, a mysterious, dense forest, in search of clues as to what happened to the narrator's mother. With extraordinary aplomb and breathtaking prose, Ntshanga has crafted an inventive and marvelous artistic accomplishment.
