The sequence of events which led to the writing of this book started at a seminar on Manufacturing Technology in the Electronics Industry given by the Institution of Production Engineers in 1987. The seminar identified that the field of manufacturing engineering for the electronics industry was effectively missing from the vast majority of production engineering degree courses. The reason for this was that production engineering departments typically spring from mechanical engineering departments. This leads to a mechanical bias in the practical aspects of such courses. The consequence of this was that electronics companies could not recruit graduates with both relevant production engineering and electronic engineering backgrounds. This necessitated either recruiting production engineering graduates and giving them the necessary electronic engineering training, or giving production engineering training to electronic engineering graduates. A consequence of the lack of courses in a subject is that there is also a lack of relevant textbooks in the area, as most textbooks are intended to tie into courses. In the field of manufacturing technology for the electronics industry, existing textbooks tend to be highly specialized and mainly concerned with the fabrication of semiconductor devices.

Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics is a corporate-focused analysis that brings clarity and practicality to the complex issues of environmental metrics in industry. The book examines the metrics implications to businesses as their responsibilities expand beyond the factory gateâ€"upstream to suppliers and downstream to products and services. It examines implications that arise from greater demand for comparability of metrics among businesses by the investment community and environmental interest groups. The controversy over what sustainable development means for businesses is also addressed. Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics identifies the most useful metrics based on case studies from four industriesâ€"automotive, chemical, electronics, and pulp and paperâ€"and includes specific corporate examples. It contains goals and recommendations for public and private sector players interested in encouraging the broader use of metrics to improve industrial environmental performance and those interested in addressing the tough issues of prioritization, weighting of metrics for meaningful comparability, and the longer term metrics needs presented by sustainable development.

This new edition textbook provides comprehensive knowledge and insight into various aspects of manufacturing technology, processes, materials, tooling, and equipment. Its main objective is to introduce the grand spectrum of manufacturing technology to individuals who will be involved in the design and manufacturing of finished products and to provide them with basic information on manufacturing technologies. Manufacturing Technology: Materials, Processes, and Equipment, Second Edition, is written in a descriptive manner, where the emphasis is on the fundamentals of the process, its capabilities, typical applications, advantages, and limitations. Mathematical modeling and equations are used only when they enhance the basic understanding of the material dealt with. The book is a fundamental textbook that covers all the manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment used to convert the raw materials to a final product. It presents the materials used in manufacturing processes and covers the heat treatment processes, smelting of metals, and other technological processes such as casting, forming, powder metallurgy, joining processes, and surface technology. Manufacturing processes for polymers, ceramics, and composites are also covered. The book also covers surface technology, fundamentals of traditional and nontraditional machining processes, numerical control of machine tools, industrial robots and hexapods, additive manufacturing, and industry 4.0 technologies. The book is written specifically for undergraduates in industrial, manufacturing, mechanical, and materials engineering disciplines of the second to fourth levels to cover complete courses of manufacturing technology taught in engineering colleges and institutions all over the world. It also covers the needs of production and manufacturing engineers and technologists participating in related industries where it is expected to be part of their professional library. Additionally, the book can be used by students in other disciplines concerned with design and manufacturing, such as automotive and aerospace engineering.

Electronics has been a Chinese pillar of success and is now the largest industry in China with growth of nearly twenty percent annually. China is the world's number one producer of TVs, recorders, DVD players, telephones, calculators, refrigerators, and air conditioners. China also has the number one cellular phone market, is number two in IC consumption, and is the third largest PC producer. Entry into the WTO is leading to economic liberalization, simplification of the licensing and foreign investment policies, and targeted government funding in electronics R&D. Massive incentives are being provided for electronics development projects and customs duties have been reduced on all electronics equipment. This report on China's electronics industry comprehensively documents the technologies, manufacturing, capabilities, and infrastructure that have made, and continues to make, China a major player in the electronics industry. This book provides data and reports on semiconductors, electronic packages, printed circuit boards, computer hardware and software, telecommunications, and various electronic systems. Other topics include the role of research government, associations, research organizations, educational institutions, science and technology information networks, as well as the pros and cons of western electronics companies establishing an infrastructure in China. The world progresses toward Industry 4.0, and manufacturers are challenged to successfully navigate this unique digital journey. To some, digitalization is a golden opportunity; to others, it is a necessary evil. But to optimist and pessimist alike, there is a widespread puzzlement over the practical details of digitalization. To many manufacturers, digital transformation is a vague and confusing concept they nevertheless must grapple with in order to survive the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The proliferation of digital manufacturing technologies adds to the confusion, leaving many manufacturers perplexed and unprepared, with little real insight into how emerging technologies can help them sustain a competitive edge in their markets. This book effectively conveys Siemens's knowledge and experience through a concept called "Smart Digital Manufacturing," a stepwise approach to realizing the promise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Smart Digital Manufacturing roadmap provides guidance and enables low-risk, high-reward adoption of new manufacturing software technologies through a series of tipping-point investment decisions that result in optimized manufacturing performance. The book provides readers with a clear understanding of what digital technology has to offer them, and how and when to invest in these essential components of tomorrow?s factories. René Wolf is Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Operations Management Software for Siemens Digital Industries Software, a business unit of the Siemens Digital Factory Division. Raffaello Lepratti is Vice President of Business Development and Marketing for Siemens Digital Industries Software.
