Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture for India The flooding Of fertile lands with canal water has in numerous districts brought saline matters from the sub soil to the surface, producing sterilization. TO meet this evil all kinds Of empirical experiments have been tried, all terminating in the completest of failures. The true and only remedy, however, has never been tried, and 'unless the powers Of the Excise Department are cur tailed, may remain untried. The remedy is simple and practical, and is as follows, viz., All lands sterilized by K utter should, after being ploughed, be sown with the seed of the Lana (salsa/(z soda) Of the Punjab. The land so sown should not be irrigated, and the seed should be sown before the rains commence. The crop will remove a considerable quantity Of salt and sulphate and carbonate Of soda from the soil. The cultivation to be carried on annually (all irrigation being prohibited), until the land refuses to grow any more Lana, owing to exhaustion of the Kat/er. The reclaimed land should now be sown with turnips, which will remove much' sulphuric acid, and next autumn the soil will have been sufficiently sweetened to grow a crop Of wheat. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. MANURES AND COMPOSTS. Farmyard and Portable Manures.--Saline Manures.--Mineral Manures.--Metallic Manures.--Vegetable and various other Manures. 83. What is meant by manuring the soil? The practical farmer collects and converts refuse matters, such as dung, urine, poultry-yard sweepings, and decomposed vegetable substances into a compound called, in English, farmyard manure, and in Hindee, Khaud. When this substance is applied to land, spread out thereon, and ploughed into the soil, the process is called manuring the land. The Chinese farmer adopts the more economical plan of manuring the growing plant, or manuring the circle or spot where one or more seeds are to be sown. The hill zemindar applies cattle manure by hand to his wheat and barley crops, as a top dressing after the snow is melted. The object is twofold: neither hares nor deer will enter or eat a growing crop so protected; and the first fall of rain dissolves the manure. The solution immediately supplies the rootlets near the surface with plant food, and as it descends deeper the roots are also fed. If the weather be clear and the sun hot, ammonia is freely given off by the manure applied as indicated, and in this case the leaves of the wheat and barley plants absorb it at their leisure and pleasure, and thrive accordingly. 84. Besides farmyard manure, are there other substances which can be and are used as manures or components of manures? and what are they called? Yes. They are technically called portable manures, on account of their being of small bulk or weight as compared with cattle or farmyard manure, and can easily be transported to great distances at a moderate cost. 85. What is the advantage of portable manures over farmyard manures? They can be used...

Excerpt from The Foundations of Scientific Agriculture It is hoped that the following chapters will supply a want - which seems to be felt in the Bombay Presidency, if not everywhere in India and the Colonies - viz. a concise manual containing an outline of the Foundational Principles of Scientific Agriculture. These chapters were originally composed in the guise of a short course of lectures addressed to a mixed class of students of agriculture, engineering, and forestry - at the Poona College - of Science: a duty which has devolved on the author for a period of over fifteen years. It can scarcely be doubted that the time has come for giving to scientific agriculture a permanent basis, by its inclusion in the curricula of the public schools of the country, not only with a view to supply trained experts to fill Government offices, but also for the benefit of the people at large. Agriculture is, properly speaking, an art; and though, as in the case of other industrial arts, science offers its cultivators aid and guidance, yet it is folly to expect sudden and great results from the establishment of Scientific Schools of Agriculture. Patience is even more necessary to the agriculturist than to the painter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Art of Agriculture is the first English edition of Obra de Agricultura by Gabriel Alonso de Herrera, an agriculture instruction manual originally written in Granada, Spain, in 1513 and published there in 1539. Herrera, widely considered the Father of Modern Spanish Agriculture, wrote this treatise nearly five centuries ago, thoughtfully recounting traditional farming techniques of the Moors before their expulsion from Spain, the Spanish colonizers in the early 1600s, and the rural Indo-Hispano bioregion spanning northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Today, farmers, gardeners, and ecological horticulturists are striving to work in harmony with nature, using traditional irrigation methods (involving acequias, sangras, and arroyos) to transform barren high-desert landscapes into fields supporting crop growth. This book speaks to today's farmers, no matter their size or output, in drought-ridden areas with land patterns characterized by natural ditches (acequias) and community water distribution systems (suertes). This type of agriculture exists not only in the American Southwest but from the Philippines to India to the Middle East. With global warming, water usage, and increased populations today, this book is more pertinent now than ever. Practical as well as philosophical, The Art of Agriculture will fascinate anyone interested in organic farming, sustainable agriculture, and permaculture worldwide.

Excerpt from Manual of Agricultural Co-Operation in Denmark: And Hints for Its Adoption in India My time being short, I had to leave Denmark most reluctantly without studying their Cooperative institutions. In 1914 I found another opportunity of visiting Denmark, and I utilized this opportunity in studying the details of its Cooperative Institutions, as embodied in this volume. These details I gathered by personally visiting various factories, business houses' and offices of the institutions; and in preparing this volume I have made an attempt to embody full practical details of the organization, working, accounting and financial success of the Danish Cooperative Unions and Associations which have made agriculture so profitable in that country. The statements of yearly or half-yearly accounts of the various institutions given will, it is hoped, give to those desirous of establishing new Associations, an idea of the extent of business for which separate unions could profitably be formed, of the nature of transactions and the various items of expenses usually incurred, of the working out and distribution of surplus profits among the members, etc. Among the English publications on the subject, I have not come across one giving such complete details of this wonderful organization. It is, therefore, hoped that this Volume will meet a general want. To promoters, organizers, managers, and workers of Cooperative Unions, the information given herein will prove beneficial.
