When college student Brad Putnam turns up dead in his bedroom in his Boston apartment, Homicide Detective Timothy Quinn is baffled by the crime scene and decides to seek the help of art history professor Sweeney St. George to make sense of the evidence. An expert on "the art of death," Sweeney immediately identifies the objects found on the body as mourning jewelry-and discovers that she knew the victim. Brad Putnam was taking her class on that very subject. Sweeney is shocked by Brad's death, and determined to help Detective Quinn unravel the mystery of Brad's death. They soon discover this is not the first tragedy to strike the Putnams, a prominent Boston family. Peter Putnam, Brad's brother, died in a terrible car accident years earlier. But the cause of the accident was never discovered, as the Putnam family covered up what happened and refused to cooperate with the police. Detective Quinn warns Sweeney not to get too involved in the Brad Putnam investigation but as she gets closer to the Putnam family, she becomes even more determined than ever to find out what happened. Haunted by secrets in her own past, Sweeney dissects the family's history and begins to realize that she may uncover secrets that were never meant to surface. Sarah Stewart Taylor's intricate and engaging follow-up to her acclaimed Agatha Award finalist debut, O'Artful Death, is an absorbing and suspenseful novel about love and family, secrets and lies-and murder.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson had been searching for their dream home for many years with little luck. Mr. Jackson thought that if they were to look in the countryside area instead of the city they could get more land and house for their buck. Mr. Jackson was a handyman, so if the house needed repairs he knew how to fix it up back to its original beauty. He asked his wife to come along with him to look at some houses in the country after he got off from work today. Of course, Mrs. Jackson said yes. Mr. Jackson arrived home around 3 p.m. Mrs. Jackson was waiting for her husband in the living room watching her favorite soap opera. Mr. Jackson entered the front door of his house, and called out to his wife saying, "Betty, are you ready to go house hunting?" "Yes, Mike, I'm ready to go," said his beautiful wife Betty. Mike and Betty got into the car and drove out to the country in search of their dream home. Mike and Betty were having a good time driving in the country and seeing the beautiful green pastures, cattle, and beautiful mansions. The weather was warm and sunny with a slight breeze, just a little over seventy degrees. The Jacksons couldn't have picked a more perfect day to search for their dream home. "Slow down honey, I think this may be the one," said Betty. Mike pulled into the front gate of the mansion. Put the car in park, got out of the car opened the gate, got back in the car, and drove to the front of the mansion. Mike put the car in park shut off the engine and said, "Darling, if the outside of the mansion looks as good as the inside we'll do everything in our power to get this home," said Mike. "Mike, I'm so excited I almost lost my breath when my eyes gazed upon this beautiful mansion," replied Betty. Mike got out of the car went over and opened Betty's door and went to the front door to see if anyone was home. Just as Mike knocked on the door, there was an envelope next to his foot. Mike picked up the envelope, opened it, and read it aloud to his wife Betty. "The letter says, the owner is out of the country and if you are inquiring about purchasing the mansion call this number and the realtor will be happy to show you the mansion," said Mike. "Call the realtor, Mike, maybe he can still come by. It’s only four o'clock," said Betty. Mike gave the realtor a call. The realtor said he was only fifteen minutes away and would be happy to show the Jacksons the home. "Mike darling, I'm so glad you got a hold of the realtor," said Betty. "Well since it's going to take the realtor about fifteen minutes to get here why don't we look at the backyard and the rest of the property," said Mike. "That's fine with me," said Betty. Betty and Mike took a stroll around the property and liked what they saw. Betty gave her husband a kiss on the cheek and said," I'm glad you decided to find a home in the country instead of the city. I hope we get this place. I feel like we belong here," said Betty. Betty and Mike were unaware of the evil inside the mansion that was waiting to devour them both.

Renowned Harvard scholar and New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore has written a strikingly original, ingeniously conceived, and beautifully crafted history of American ideas about life and death from before the cradle to beyond the grave. How does life begin? What does it mean? What happens when we die? “All anyone can do is ask,” Lepore writes. “That’s why any history of ideas about life and death has to be, like this book, a history of curiosity.” Lepore starts that history with the story of a seventeenth-century Englishman who had the idea that all life begins with an egg, and ends it with an American who, in the 1970s, began freezing the dead. In between, life got longer, the stages of life multiplied, and matters of life and death moved from the library to the laboratory, from the humanities to the sciences. Lately, debates about life and death have determined the course of American politics. Each of these debates has a history. Investigating the surprising origins of the stuff of everyday life—from board games to breast pumps—Lepore argues that the age of discovery, Darwin, and the Space Age turned ideas about life on earth topsy-turvy. “New worlds were found,” she writes, and “old paradises were lost.” As much a meditation on the present as an excavation of the past, The Mansion of Happiness is delightful, learned, and altogether beguiling.

Newcomer Sarah Stewart Taylor delivers a compelling and atmospheric cozy mystery that introduces Sweeney St. George, an art historian in Boston with a special interest in the art of death. Sweeney becomes interested in Byzantium, Vermont, an art colony that flourished in the late nineteenth century, when she comes upon a photograph of the striking gravestone of a girl who drowned, and may have been murdered, in 1890. The stone is in a tiny cemetery surrounded by other beautiful, if unremarkable, headstones, some dating back hundreds of years. But the unsigned sculpture that marks this young woman's grave is of extremely high quality and the artist is unrecognizable. Sweeney is soon hooked, not only on the mystery of who created the beautiful sculpture but also on the details of the events surrounding the girl's death. When the friend who showed her the gravestone invites Sweeney to visit his relatives in Byzantium for Christmas, she jumps at the chance, knowing full well that the girl's murder has achieved the status of mythology in the town and hoping she'll be able to uncover new information. But by the time they arrive, her interest in the girl and the sculpture has gotten around town and, in fact, seems to have disturbed a killer. For not long after Sweeney arrives, one of the girl's descendants is murdered, shot and left lying in the cemetery. Taylor has written a remarkably accomplished debut mystery in the traditional cozy vein, and she's sure to win over legions of fans with O' Artful Death.

A roadmap for spiritual formation In Mansions of the Heart, author R. Thomas Ashbrook begins with his personal story of frustration and confusion while serving as a pastor of the church. He tells of discovering a new path of spiritual transformation and offers seekers a way to move forward on their own spiritual paths. Written for anyone who wants to develop a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God, Mansions of the Heart offers a step-by-step guide through a spiritual-formation road map based on Teresa of Avila's seven mansions. This spiritual classic reveals various phases of spiritual formation, for which Ashbrook offers a personal guide to spiritual transformation. Mansions debunks commonly held myths that lead to spiritual dead ends and describes a clear pathway to a deepening love relationship with God. The book also offers church leaders a process for helping people in their faith communities grow as disciples of Christ.
