ABSTRACT: Managed care has consumed the healthcare industry and changed the way hospitals conduct business. The study examined the impact, if any, managed care has had on hospital based nurse managers. The nurse managers in the study viewed managed care as being synonymous with change. From their perspective this change permeated every aspect of their role. It required them to approach their job and responsibilities from a different vantage point, that being one of cost reduction. The influence of cost reduction was woven throughout five distinct areas of change that the study participants identified. The five areas of change were: composition of staff, clarification of care, nurse manager's role redesign, multiunit responsibility, and an external focus. The study showed that the nurse managers had changed significantly to meet the challenges of todays managed care environment. Their focus on cost reduction while maintaining or improving the quality of care was essential in securing and keeping the managed care business. These focuses helped to insure the financial viability of their institutions and assisted in obtaining and maintaining the managed care business.
