Document from the year 2018 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: In theory, epidemiological transitions are enhanced by designing of appropriate health strategies aimed at achieving sustainability in the global healthcare system. Therefore, approaches towards the achievement of universal access to healthcare by the global population will reduce mortality rates and improve health in general. This is the core approach adopted by the World Health Organization through the implementation of MDG #5: improving maternal health, MDG #4: reducing child mortality and MDG #6 combating malaria and other infectious diseases. It has been reported that various countries around the globe have recorded diverse progress towards achieving the principal MDG targets, especially with regard to MDG #6. However, the achievement of MDG 6; target 6C depends on the commitment of different countries. It is worth noting that, some countries have recorded remarkable progress towards the reversal of malaria incidence rate while others have lagged behind owing to historical, cultural, structural and critical factors. For instance, Uganda is among the countries which have recorded remarkable progress towards the achievement of MDG 6C target, although it has not met other target objectives of MDG #6. Therefore, this argumentative paper will provide a comprehensive evaluation of Uganda’s progress in combating malaria, and provide appropriate recommendations.

The new edition of Population and Development offers an up-to-date perspective on one of the critical issues at the heart of the problems of development for all countries, and especially those that seek to implement major economic and social change: the reflexive relationships between a country’s population and its development. How does population size, distribution, age structure and skill base affect development patterns and prospects? How has global development been affected by regional population change? Retaining the structure of the well-received first edition, the book has been substantially revised and updated. The opening chapters of the book establish the theoretical and historical basis for examining the basic reflexive relationship, with exploration of the Malthusian perspective and its critics to examine how population change affects development, and exploration of the Demographic Transition Model and its critics to examine how, why and to what extent development drives population change. These are followed by empirically rich chapters on each of the main components of population change – mortality, fertility, internal and international migration, age structures and skill base – each elaborating key ideas with detailed and contrasting case studies from all regions of the developing world. There are concluding and more integrative discussions on population policies and global population futures. Bringing together Population Studies, Development Studies and Geography, the new edition of Population and Development is a key resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students across a range of programmes with specialist modules on population change. There is a large bibliography, with major new sections identifying a wide range of online resources for further study. Each chapter contains a reading guide with discussion questions. The text is enlivened by a number of case studies from around the world, most of which are new or have been substantially revised. Written by a leading international scholar in population, the book successfully integrates cutting-edge academic research with the focus and efforts of international development agencies.

The Global Monitoring Report 2014/2015: Ending Poverty and Sharing Prosperity was written jointly by the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund, with substantive inputs from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This year's report details, for the first time, progress toward the WBG's twin goals of ending extreme poverty by 2030 and promoting shared prosperity and assesses the state of policies and institutions that are important for achieving them. The report continues to monitor progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Also for the first time, the report includes information about high-income countries. It finds that while gaps in living standards have been closing in many countries, the well-being of households in the bottom 40 percent, as measured by the non-income MDGs such as access to education and health services, remains below that of households in the top 60 percent. The focus of this year's report is on three elements needed to make growth more inclusive and sustainable: investment in human capital that favors the poor, the best use of safety nets, and steps to ensure the environmental sustainability of economic growth. These three elements are imperative to all countries' development strategies, and are also fundamental to global efforts to achieve the twin goals, the MDGs, and the Sustainable Development Goals that will succeed the MDGs. Global Monitoring Report 2014/2015 was prepared in collaboration with regional development banks and other multilateral partners.
