Excerpt from Film Folk: "Close-Ups" Of the Men, Women, and Children Who Make the "Movies" As a detached, but interested, observer he watched the moving picture industry grow from its crude beginnings to the huge thing it has become, and during all those years he wondered why some one of the great army of publicity men employed by the various studios did not splash in and tell the truth about the film folk, finally concluding that it was either that their familiarity with the truth had bred contempt, or that the companies, for some strange reason, had employed only fiction writers. I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History

I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History
Author: Walter Mirisch
Publisher: Univ of Wisconsin Press
Total Pages: 502
Release: 2008-04-10
Genre: Biography & Autobiography
ISBN: 0299226433

This is a moving, star-filled account of one of Hollywood’s true golden ages as told by a man in the middle of it all. Walter Mirisch’s company has produced some of the most entertaining and enduring classics in film history, including West Side Story, Some Like It Hot, In the Heat of the Night, and The Magnificent Seven. His work has led to 87 Academy Award nominations and 28 Oscars. Richly illustrated with rare photographs from his personal collection, I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History reveals Mirisch’s own experience of Hollywood and tells the stories of the stars—emerging and established—who appeared in his films, including Natalie Wood, John Wayne, Peter Sellers, Sidney Poitier, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. With hard-won insight and gentle humor, Mirisch recounts how he witnessed the end of the studio system, the development of independent production, and the rise and fall of some of Hollywood’s most gifted (and notorious) cultural icons. A producer with a passion for creative excellence, he offers insights into his innovative filmmaking process, revealing a rare ingenuity for placating the demands of auteur directors, weak-kneed studio executives, and troubled screen sirens. From his early start as a movie theater usher to the presentation of such masterpieces as The Apartment, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Great Escape, Mirisch tells the inspiring life story of his climb to the highest echelon of the American film industry. This book assures Mirisch’s legacy—as Elmore Leonard puts it—as “one of the good guys.” Best Books for Special Interests, selected by the American Association of School Librarians, and Best Books for General Audiences, selected by the Public Library Association

A generation hence, the fundamental problems confronting the makers - how to show real people, doing inter esting things in interesting places - will be the same. Excerpt from The Home Cinema Individuality of film play is the one saviour of the amateur, and by that I mean the real individuality which enables a man to think out his own plots and schemes for his film, not the inferior individuality that puts a few deft touches to another man's scenario and script. The avowed object of this latter part, then, is to stimulate thought on the subject; hence the details of any ideas given are in such form that a certain amount of thought is needed to put them into practice. It is highly probable that the reader who sets out to do this will, before he has finished, have evolved an entirely new scheme subtly sug gested in some obscure way by the original. To show this process, in the chapter detailing a game of chess and an old soldier, I have printed ideas as they occurred to me. I was asked, Can you make a film about chess? And the resulting and successful scenario was evolved. Every example given is strictly practicable, may be attempted with confidence, and good films will result. Many of the ideas are printed in this country for the first time, and starting points for thought are given covering the whole field of amateur cinematography, even to the possibility of earning cash, and if every reader obtains from my work the germ of but one bright idea' for either screening or making his films, I Will be content.
