Machine vision technology has created a strong interest among research organizations, resulting in many innovative products. Despite this end users have been very skeptical towards machine vision and its robustness in harsh industrial environments. This book presents the results of a national machine vision technology program aimed at boosting research and putting research results to work in practical industrial applications. The topics to be covered include image acquisition, analysis of surface color and texture, applications of machine vision in surface inspection and process control, 3-D measurements, and CAD-based machine vision.

As perception stands for the acquisition of a real world representation by interaction with an environment, learning is the modification of this internal representation. This book highlights the relation between perception and learning and describes the influence of the learning in the interaction with the environment.Besides, this volume contains a series of applications of both machine learning and perception, where the former is often embedded in the latter and vice-versa.Among the topics covered, there are visual perception for autonomous robots, model generation of visual patterns, attentional reasoning, genetic approaches and various categories of neural networks.

This book contains selected papers presented at Vision Interface '98, held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 1998. It spans a wide spectrum of topics in computer vision and image processing. During the last three decades, the field of computer vision and image processing has grown at a phenomenal rate due to the development of innovative techniques coupled with the advance in hardware that have been made available at lower cost. Numerous practical applications are now being realized to justify the theme of Vision Interface '98 — “Real World Applications of Computer Vision”.

This book is a collection of real-world applications of neural networks, which were presented at the ICANN '95 conference of the European Neural Network Society. The contributions have been carefully selected by the Program Committee under three criteria: soundness of the technical approach, relevance for the application sector, and quality of the results obtained. The book covers all major areas of industrial and service activities: process engineering, control and monitoring, technical diagnosis and nondestructive testing, power systems, robotics, transportation, telecommunications, remote sensing, banking, finance and insurance, forecasting, document processing, and medicine. It thus represents one of the most comprehensive existing surveys of the applicability and use of neural networks in industry and services.

The paper is organized as follows: In section 2, we describe the no- orientation-discontinuity interfering model based on a Gaussian stochastic model in analyzing the properties of the interfering strokes. In section 3, we describe the improved canny edge detector with an ed- orientation constraint to detect the edges and recover the weak ones of the foreground words and characters; In section 4, we illustrate, discuss and evaluate the experimental results of the proposed method, demonstrating that our algorithm significantly improves the segmentation quality; Section 5 concludes this paper. 2. The norm-orientation-discontinuity interfering stroke model Figure 2 shows three typical samples of original image segments from the original documents and their magnitude of the detected edges respectively. The magnitude of the gradient is converted into the gray level value. The darker the edge is, the larger is the gradient magnitude. It is obvious that the topmost strong edges correspond to foreground edges. It should be noted that, while usually, the foreground writing appears darker than the background image, as shown in sample image Figure 2(a), there are cases where the foreground and background have similar intensities as shown in Figure 2(b), or worst still, the background is more prominent than the foreground as in Figure 2(c). So using only the intensity value is not enough to differentiate the foreground from the background. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f)

This book is the result of a special workshop on Spatial Computing which brought together experts in computer vision, visualization, multimedia and geographic information systems to discuss common problems and applications. The common theme of the workshop was the need to integrate human perception and domain knowledge with developing representations and solutions to problems which necessarily involve the interpretation of sensed data. The overwhelming conclusion was that these different areas of spatial computing should be communicating more than is done at present and that such workshops and publications would help this process.
