A comprehensive and immersive survey of thirty-five Beethoven piano sonatas Beethoven’s piano sonatas are among the iconic cornerstones of the classical music repertoire. Jan Marisse Huizing offers an in-depth study of the sonatas using available autographs, first editions, recordings, and nearly three hundred musical examples. Digging into the historical background and historical performance practice, the book provides illuminating detail on Beethoven’s pianism as well as his characteristics of notation, form and content, “types of touch,” articulation, beaming, pedal indications, character, rubato, meter, metric constructions, tempo, and metronome marks. Packed with anecdotes, quotations, and considerable new information, the book will inspire all involved with these masterworks, playing a fortepiano or modern Grand, giving the sense of the composer sitting beside them as he translates his inspiration and ideas into his notation.

Many books have been written about Beethoven. But it is rare to find one that seeks an alternative between the fragmentation found in most specialized studies and the superficial overview typical of popular biography. In this volume, Carl Dahlhaus, one of the century's leading musicologists, combines interpretations of individual works that focus on issues of composition and musical history, with excursions into the musical aesthetics of the period around 1800; an age that was not only a "classical" period in the history of the arts but also one in that aesthetics carved itself a place in the center of philosophical attention. The theme of the book is the reconstruction of Beethoven's "musical thinking" from the evidence in the works themselves and their context in the history of ideas.

This authoritative biography of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a landmark in its meticulous research and use of source material. For the American author Alexander Wheelock Thayer (1817-97), it represented a lifelong labour of love, yet it remained unfinished at his death. His friend Hermann Deiters (1833-1907) edited and translated Thayer's work into German, publishing three volumes which covered Beethoven's life to 1816. Since Deiters also died before the biography could be completed, musicologist Hugo Riemann (1849-1919) was called upon to conclude the work. The final German volumes appeared in 1907 and 1908. It was the American critic Henry Edward Krehbiel (1854-1923) who prepared the present work, the first and considerably revised English version, published in three volumes in 1921. Volume 1 covers Beethoven's career through to 1802, the year of the Heiligenstadt Testament.

The essays in this volume grew out of an international Beethoven conference held in honor of Lewis Lockwood at Harvard University in 1996. Michelle Fillion?s opening essay explores the Mass in C and its turn away from the ?heroic? style of the ?middle-period? works. In ?Beethoven and the Aesthetic State,? Karol Berger reflects on the manner in which the composer?s music often shifts back and forth between a ?real? and an ?imagined? world. William Drabkin examines the role of the cello part in Beethoven's late quartets, particularly in regard to the elusive parameter of texture. Richard Kramer?s reading of the song Resignation (1818) opens new perspectives on the idea of a ?late? style in the composer?s output. ø In ?Beethoven's ?Expressive? Markings,? Leo Treitler demonstrates how seemingly straightforward directions to performers about tempo, mood, or dynamics raise fundamental questions about the relationship between music and language. Michael C. Tusa reviews more than a century of attempts to relate form and content in the last movement of the Ninth Symphony and offers a new interpretation on the idea of the choral finale as a kind of four-movement symphony in its own right. Maynard Solomon?s essay on the ?Diabelli? variations argues that the theme itself, although simple, is by no means trivial and indeed is ?perfectly suited to unpacking issues of firstness and lastness and their interchangeability.? William Drabkin concludes the volume with a review essay on Beethoven: Interpretationen seiner Werke, edited by Albrecht Riethm_ller, Carl Dahlhaus, and Alexander Ringer.
