Excerpt from Lucretius and the Atomic Theory There is a somewhat popular impression that speculation, or abstract thought, and imagination are incompatible. Perhaps they are rarely found together in remarkable exercise in the same individual; and this, while no proof of their incompatibility, is quite sufficient to satisfy a popular logic. I should be very sorry, indeed, to think that they are incompatible; for I do not know any greater help to the speculative power, or better corrective of vagueness in speculation, than imagination. The more you can individualise thought, the more clear it becomes, the less verbal, the more real; and all individualising, all embodiment of the abstract, is an imaginative effort, and often a very hard one. Excerpt from The Atomic Theory of Lucretius: Contrasted With Modern Doctrines of Atoms and Evolution In modern scientific thought we find a parallel which helps us to realize how Lucretius's atomic theory taught him to regard Nature, and how his conception of Matter developed into a naive theory of Evolution. Recent inquiry and Specula tion regarding the process of Evolution, the. Origin of Life and the potency of Matter, as illustrated by Tyndall's famous Presidential address, will enable us to realize more clearly, by comparison, what Lucretius's actual belief on these points was. 'In Lucretius on Atomic Motion Don Fowler produces a commentary of Lucretius like no other. His commentary achieves the status of a meta-commentary... what makes this commentary claim our attention is the range of texts, both poetic and philosophical, ancient and modern, that Fowler brings to bear in revealing the deep background --and the later fortune - of Lucretius' poem.' -Diskin Clay, Times Literary SupplementThis is the first commentary on Lucretius' theory of atomic motion, one of the most difficult and technical parts of De rerum natura. The late Don Fowler sets new standards for Lucretian studies in his awesome command both of the ancient literary, philological, and philosophical background to this Latin Epicurean poem, and of the relevant modern scholarship.
