Readers will discover how to defeat the special problems of codependency through loving teamwork. Recovering Love explores techniques couples can use to escape the destructive victim-rescuer-persecutor triangle with self-love and teamlove. Case examples show how couples are using Dr. Cookerly’s CoRecovery love knowledge to put an end to codependency factors that prevent them from succeeding at love. Included are eight major ways people demonstrate love, and their benefits to health, self-esteem, and relationships. Couples will discover how to avoid codependency by learning the skills of real emotional intimacy. For parents, Dr. Cookerly provides specific techniques for breaking the generational chain setting children free to lead non-codependent loving lives. "The first part of the book is so far ahead of its time that it is still current. It reveals Reik's departure from Freud's theories and from those of most of his contemporaries in psychology and psychoanalysis. Part Two is a greatly abbreviated version of Masochism in Modern Man, retaining those parts with a direct bearing on the subject of this volume. Part Three offers two essays on why people remain single. In the author's usual direct style, they deal with the marriage shyness of the male and the psychological fears and resistance of both men and women to acceptance of the marriage bond. Part Four is Reik at his wisest. "The first lady whom I asked to read the manuscript said smilingly: M̀any of your impressions about us (women) are correct. No man should read the book!' A few seconds later, she said: Òr rather, every man should read the book!' ""--BOOK JACKET.

The Gift of Love explores the intelligibility of Augustine’s claim that we come to know and encounter God in and through our love. Building upon the discoveries of recent scholarship, Andrew Staron reads Augustine’s De Trinitate not as presenting the Trinity as a concept to be grasped, but rather as a rational study of the limits of theological language and the possibility of coming to know the Trinity because of those limits. Human dependence on God’s initiative indicates that the Trinitarian God of love is knowable only through attention to how God’s self-revelation transforms and saves us. Therefore, to see God, one seeks to mark love’s formative activity within the heart. Jean-Luc Marion’s rigorous description of the gift of love offers to Augustine’s theology a phenomenological texture by which the Trinitarian love given in revelation might be made incarnate in one’s life. The Gift of Love presents a reason for hope that while coming to know “the Trinity that God is” might be impossible for human beings, it is made possible by God’s antecedent gift of love, given in the missions Son and Holy Spirit, and iconically received in the particularity of one’s own love.

Oswald Bayer is one of the most important contemporary interpreters of Martin Luther and confessional Lutheran theologians. As a Luther scholar, Bayer has identified the precise reformational turning point in Luther's life and theology, which is also the central point for a truly Lutheran theology: the promise of a forgiving and justifying God preached in Jesus Christ. As a Lutheran theologian, Bayer stresses that this promise of God is the ultimate subject matter of all theology, and that all other theological topics have the justifying promise of God as their basis and boundary. Hanging by a Promise investigates how Bayer addresses Luther's topic of the hidden God--a God of wrath who accomplishes everything--from the standpoint of the justifying promise of God. Luther's doctrine of the hidden God has been taken up, discussed, and interpreted by many in the modern Protestant theological tradition. Yet, Bayer addresses it in a way in which others before him have not. Going beyond interpretation and evaluation, Bayer actually makes use of Luther's hidden God in his own theology. For Bayer, the hidden God is the counterpoint to God's gracious promise given in the preached Christ, a counterpoint that brings serious tension into the very heart of theology.
