When young Maria Hallett meets the worldly Sam Bellamy and they fall in love, the stage is set for heartbreak, a tragic betrayal, the wreck of a fabulous pirate ship, and a fiery conclusion. Set in colonial America and ranging from Boston to Cape Cod to the Caribbean, The Lost Tavern, a historical fiction, encompasses in 250 pages the worlds of two lovers, pirate crews, and an evolving New England culture of merchants, seamen, and already vanishing Indian tribes. All of these worlds come together in one way or another at Samuel Smith's island tavern, which was rediscovered and excavated in the 1970's. During the excavation a shattered skull was discovered in the basement, a detail that figures prominently at the end of the novel. The tale is based on the legendary escapades of the notorious pirate, Sam Bellamy, and his relationship to his young lover, but it employs a large canvas. While taking liberties with the legend, the novel is true to the historical context, to pirate lore, and to the dangers they face both on the seas and on the land.

A culinary history of Providence and the memorable eateries that once made their homes there. In the city that invented the diner, so many amazing restaurants remain only in memories. The Silver Top had fresh coffee every twenty minutes, and the Ever Ready was hot dog heaven. Miss Dutton's Green Room and the Shepard Tea Room beckoned shoppers in their Sunday finest. At Childs, the griddle chef made butter cakes in the window for night owls, and Harry Houdini supped at midnight with H.P. Lovecraft at the Waldorf Lunch. Themed lounges like the Beachcomber and the Bacchante Room chased away the Prohibition blues. Downcity Diner offered a famous meatloaf, and Ming Garden’s Ming Wings were a staple for regulars. Author David Norton Stone details the restaurants that still hold a place in the hearts of locals

From the mind of #1 New York Times bestselling author Larry Niven, come twenty-six tales and vignettes from this interplanetary gathering place, collected for the first time in one volume. When a tremendous spacecraft took orbit around the Earth's moon and began sending smaller landers down toward the North Pole, the newly arrived visitors quickly set up a permanent spaceport at Mount Forel in Siberia. Their presence attracted many, and a few people grew conspicuously rich from secrets they learned from talking to the aliens. One of these men, Rick Schumann established a tavern catering to all of various species of visiting aliens, a place he named the Draco Tavern. This collection includes: "The Subject Is Closed": A priest visits the tavern and goes one-on-one with a chirpsithra alien on the subject of God and life after death. "Table Mannners: A Folk Tale": Rick Schumann is invited to hunt with five folk aliens, but he's not quite sure what their hunt entails, or if he will be the hunted. "Wisdom of Demons": The age-old question of wisdom vs. knowledge is asked when Rick is confronted by a human who has been granted the wisdom of an individual gligstith(click)optok alien. "Losing Mars" in this unpublished tale, a group of aliens who call Mars and its moon home, arrive at the Tavern only to find that humans have mostly forgotten about their neighboring planet. The little tavern seemed abandoned when Paulus and his men arrived; Roman soldiers desperate for food and shelter were grateful for what they found. There was more: a female slave left behind, sick unto death and hidden behind the cellar. Paulus kept her secret from the others and when he was injured as the soldiers moved on, Gilda in turn saved his life. So began the saga of the Gildersons, hosts of the One Bull Inn for fifteen hundred years. From wine shop to ale house to secret club and facing transformation again in the twentieth century, the One Bull saw love and happiness, sacrifice, murder, suicide-and miracles. Next to it stood a chapel where lay the body of an ancient and holy British king. It was said that no one who asked for help in prayer at Cerdic's tomb came away without their miracle and it was true- though often the miracle was what was truly needed, not what had been requested. Woven together through history, the Inn and the chapel guided the Gildersons' lives until the day when one final choice had to be made; to dispose of the past or to rebuild it in hope just one more time.
