So why does she feel so empty, like she's looking for a missing piece she can't find? The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn't quite fit in right away, she can't help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked. As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there's another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn't a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she's searched so long for.

First published in 1999, this volume is a collection of essays focused on the theme of partnership with parents in social work practice with children and families. It covers issues relating to the quality of care and preparation for aftercare, particularly children’s identity needs and preparation for life after care which are highlighted in the Quality Protects programme. It developed from an action research project, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and conducted by the editors a Warwick University between 1993 and 1996. Through teaching activities associated with the implementation of the Children Act 1989 the editors became aware that there were many parents who had lost contact with both their child and their child’s social workers after their child had entered the care system. These were the ‘lost’ parents of the study. Partnership with parents has become an integral part of social work with children and families living together or apart. Inevitably it concerns many other people involved in the care of children and providing advice to individuals. Partnership permeates all aspects of relationships between parents, children and those providing care in place of parents. Consequently, the issues discussed in this book are of relevance to all those working directly or indirectly with children, parents and other relatives. Amongst these are social workers, family placement workers, carers and residential workers, team managers and policy makers in local authority social services departments, guardians ad litem, court welfare officers and lawyers acting for children or parents, children’s rights officers and advisers working in voluntary agencies which support families and children.

An improbable adventure sprung from the true account of ‘wabah babi’, or ‘swine plague’, in the far eastern reaches of the Indonesian archipelago, bordering with Papua New Guinea. Home to the Dani people who live much as they have for the past 2000 years. The two leading characters, an American naval officer and ‘disease chaser’, and an Indonesian government doctor, undertake an arduous expedition to investigate the outbreak against a backdrop of a hostage-taking-crisies that has caught the world’s attention. Making for a story that could not have been dreamt up. Their journey takes on a fantastical turn, the stuff of fiction, when they find themselves fighting for survival in the remote jungle highlands. Their interactions with the Dani highlight the fragility and resilience of the human spirit. Theirs is an amazing trek treated with guile and humor. The author takes liberties in borrowing from factual accounts of reported events associated with a ‘very real’ and ongoing insurgency, adding authenticity and context to the narrative. He reveals himself by invoking images from the storied cinema and delving into tangents: passions revealed in primitive art and the 'natural world' - the sublime to grotesque, and beyond bizarre.

After playing in his final game of the season, Mason Johnson, six-time All Pro wide receiver with the Chicago Bears, learns that his wife, daughter, and parents have been killed in a tragic car accident. For sixteen months, Mason takes time to grieve the loss of his family, and liquidate everything he owns, including his parents immense estate. His father had been the owner of a large brokerage company in downtown Chicago, which featured several other branch offices in the Midwest. While growing up, Mason hardly knew his parents, instead being raised by his nanny, Sylvia, who took on the role of mother, father, teacher, coach, and friend. Masons parents had been more interested in the business and social aspects of their lives, ignoring the son who was, to them, a bother. During his final week in Chicago, after all business matters had been settled, Mason becomes privy to a letter that his father had written to him right before he died that explained the reason for his parental inadequacies: Mason had been adopted at birth, and instead of being a relished member of the family, he had only been a constant reminder of his dads inability to father children. The letter is also a complete revelation of all the details of the adoption, giving the names of his biological parents, and relating how they had given their firstborn up when they were in their teens. Five years later, however, the couple reunited, married, and had three more children. So Mason learns not only the whereabouts of his biological parents, but that they had reunited and produced two brothers and a sister. The eldest son, Eric, died tragically in an accident while on duty with the National Guard when he was only twenty-five years old. This is a story about Mason Johnsons search for his family, and how the revelation of his identity would ensue. But there was one twist . . . His deceased brothers wife, Erica.
