The book brings recent results of research and development in the field of materials engineering, experimental methods, modeling, etc., with the aim to characterize mechanical properties of materials from nano to micro/meso-scale. Contributions focus on indentation and other methods for hardness as well as other mechanical properties assessment, measurement of deformations and stresses, time-dependent properties with related microstructure analyses (TEM/SEM, AFM, etc.) regardless of material type (metals, ceramics, polymers, biomaterials, concrete, etc.).

The present collection of papers from 12th International Conference Local Mechanical Properties which was held on November 04.- 06.2015 in Liberec, Czech Republic presents current publications of conference participants from several countries . Besides the traditional research in area of mechanical properties of different metallic materials, composites, polymers was focused attention also on research of thin layers and nanomaterials. The significant potential of application of these new materials significantly affects on research activities of academia. Future application of innovative materials in different areas of human activities, already requires from researchers the definition of materials properties on atomic level. Conference by its content contributed to the deepening of knowledge about the internal structure of various materials, their mechanical and tribological properties.

This work contains experimental, theoretical, and modeling research papers from a December 2003 symposium on the mechanical behavior of thin films, touching on topics in stress evolution, modeling stresses and film instability, deformation and adhesion, film fracture and fatigue, processing and structure, indentation testing, mechanical properties, properties and performance, and multilayers and nanolaminates. Some specific topics include fracture patterns in thin films and multilayers, thin film herringbone buckling patterns, the effect of oxygen on adhesion of thin copper films to silicon nitride, and the effects of stress amplitude on the fatigue of polysilicon. This volume contains over 70 papers on advanced research and development of processing, mechanical properties and mechanics of ceramics and composites from the proceedings of the 30th International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, January 22-27, 2006, in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The conference was organized and sponsored by The American Ceramic Society and The American Ceramic Society's Engineering Ceramics Division in conjunction with the Nuclear and Environmental Technology Division. It covers underlying fundamental links between microstructure and properties, and the ability to achieve desired multifunctional properties through innovative processing techniques.

The volumes VIII, IX and X examine the physical and technical foundation for recent progress in applied scanning probe techniques. This is the first book to summarize the state-of-the-art of this technique. The field is progressing so fast that there is a need for a set of volumes every 12 to 18 months to capture latest developments. These volumes constitute a timely comprehensive overview of SPM applications.

This work approaches the fields of homogenization and of materials design for the linear and nonlinear mechanical properties with prescribed properties-profile. The set of achievable properties is bounded by the zeroth-order bounds (which are material specific), the first-order bounds (containing volume fractions of the phases) and the second-order Hashin-Shtrikman bounds with eigenfields in terms of tensorial texture coefficients for arbitrarily anisotropic textured materials.

Solid cellular materials (foams, lattice materials, honeycombs, etc.) are attractive and have resulted in the creation of an active subject for structural, mechanical and material scientists in recent years. Indeed, constant progress in the manufacturing techniques are improving their properties and reducing their costs; and mass productions and industrial applications are beginning. An important mechanical problem is how to characterize and model the mechanical behaviour of these materials, which is necessary for industrial design and numerical predictions involved in various applications such as light weight structures, energy absorbers. This volume contains twenty-two contributions written by distinguished invited speakers from all part of the world to the iutam symposium on mechanical properties of cellular materials. It provides a survey on recent advances in the characterisation and modeling of the mechanical properties of solid cellular materials under static and dynamic loading as well as their applications in lightweight structures analysis and design. This volume will be of interest to structural, mechanical and material scientists and engineers working on different aspects of this new class of materials (for example in microstructure observation, micromechanical and multiscale modeling, phenomenological models, structural impact behaviour and numerical validation).
