In this compelling memoir, Mary Kay Thompson Tetreault describes how a Catholic girl from small-town Nebraska discovered her callings as a feminist, as an academic, and as a university administrator. With remarkable candor and compassion, she reflects on how second-wave feminism has transformed academia and how much reform is still needed.

Entering the academy at the dawn of the women’s rights movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the first generation of feminist academics had a difficult journey. With few female role models, they had to forge their own path and prove that feminist scholarship was a legitimate enterprise. Later, when many of these scholars moved into administrative positions, hoping to reform the university system from within, they encountered entrenched hierarchies, bureaucracies, and old boys’ networks that made it difficult to put their feminist principles into practice. In this compelling memoir, Mary Kay Thompson Tetreault describes how a Catholic girl from small-town Nebraska discovered her callings as a feminist, as an academic, and as a university administrator. She recounts her experiences at three very different schools: the small progressive Lewis & Clark College, the massive regional university of Cal State Fullerton, and the rapidly expanding Portland State University. Reflecting on both her accomplishments and challenges, she considers just how much second-wave feminism has transformed academia and how much reform is still needed. With remarkable candor and compassion, Thompson Tetreault provides an intimate personal look at an era when both women’s lives and university culture changed for good. Documents are milestones and markers of human activity, part of who and what we are. Our story can be told through the objects, profound and trivial, famous and forgotten, by which we remember and are remembered. Documents That Changed the Way We Live examines dozens of compelling stories that describe these documents; their creation, motivation, influence, importance, historical and social context, provenance; and their connections to contemporary information objects, technologies, and trends. These documents include the following: “Exaltation of Innana,” a Sumerian hymn composed c. 2300 BCE by the high priestess Enheduanna, likely the first known author…of anything The “We Can Do It!” poster everybody knows is Rosie the Riveter calling women to work in the factories in World War II. Except it’s not, and she isn’t Joseph McCarthy’s “list” of Communists that ruined lives and careers, because it was believed - even though it never existed The “He has waged cruel war…” passage on slavery, deleted from the Declaration of Independence The poorly designed Palm Beach County “butterfly ballot,” on which the 2000 U.S. presidential election may have hinged And the lesser-known stories behind the Zapruder Film, the Watergate tapes, the Obama birth certificate, airplane black boxes, Thanksgiving, IQ tests, the Star-Spangled Banner, why Americans spell the way they do, Nobel Prizes, Wikipedia, and how you’re cooking dinner tonight

Instant bestseller: Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön shares life-changing practices for living with wisdom, confidence, and integrity amidst confusing situations and uncertain times We live in difficult times. Life so often seems like a turbulent river threatening to drown us and destroy our world. Why, then, shouldn’t we cling to the certainty of the comfortable—to our deep-seated habits and familiar ways? Because, Pema Chödrön teaches, that kind of fear-based clinging keeps us from the infinitely more powerful experience of being fully alive. The Buddhist teachings she presents here—known as the “Three Commitments”—provide a treasure trove of wisdom for learning to step right into the unknown, to completely and fearlessly embrace the groundlessness of being human, for people of all faiths. When we do, we begin to see not only how much better it feels to live an openhearted life, but we find that we begin to naturally and more effectively reach out to help and heal all those around us.

When you succeed, you inspire! Congratulations on receiving this life changing book. “The Book that changed my Life”, is a gem that equips you with the transformative paint and the artistic brush to create your most beautiful reality on this canvas of life. This book will equip you with ideas and priceless pearls of wisdom that you can use to achieve success in all spheres of your life. The author examines the habits of successful people and condenses them into a single compendium for you to easily apply into your everyday living. The answers to good health, sound wealth, contentment and serenity lies herein. This book unearths the secrets and simple truths to success by extracting several mediations and transforming these into practical solutions, necessary for you to excel and grow exponentially in your life. I personally, have applied the teachings of this book, to achieve many great things including the purchase of two properties before the age of 30, the establishment of the Changing Lives Foundation, the penning of several articles, the deliverance of several key note addresses, the management of several workshops and finding the perfect life partner to name but a few. I have been fortunate enough to have interacted with many great individuals through the course of my career and I have also been blessed enough to be placed into many challenging situations that forced me to sip from the cup of life albeit at first bitter, the lessons of the aftertaste was indeed sweet. I grew up in a middle income home with a hard working self-employed father and an equally as hard working stay at home mother from both of whom, I have received priceless knowledge, guidance and understanding to navigate through the waters of life and achieve success in every area thereto. The lessons and advice from this book, has helped several young and old, men and women, from diverse parts of society, achieve success, in both their personal and professional lives. To cite a few other real life examples, a young South African female, took the decision to change her life and relocated from Durban to Johannesburg in 2019. She had her life transformed on all levels both professionally and personally. After applying the principles of this compendium, she has gone, from being an unemployed, shy and reserved teenager who lived in a township in KwaZulu-Natal, to becoming an independent, confident, outspoken and now permanently employed woman, in the role of a junior manager might I add, now living her best life in Sandton. Need I say more about what this book can do for you? A divorced, middle aged South African male faced endless child custody battles and was constantly depressed, tired and demotivated. He is now enjoying some of the best moments of his life in his professional and personal sphere, heading up his department, always laughing, and now spending precious moments with this child. He is now happier and healthier than he would ever have imagined. How about a bi-polar male who lived alone with little to no hope for his life. He lost his parents as a teenager and lived between families. He made the decision to turn his life around and found a renewed purpose. He is now a renowned physical trainer and has a stable happy family. Your life will change forever once you’ve read and applied the wisdom of this compendium. Being an educator and a mentor, I always encourage reading and nourishment of minds. Reading is knowledge, knowledge is power, power is choice, choice is freedom and freedom is the ultimate goal of life. Go on… Open the pages toward the best of your life and rewrite your destiny to live your Best Life! Succeed in Your Life and Inspire Others to do the same!
