The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. International law is increasing in relevance to the topic of secession. This book demonstrates that if a secessionist entity’s effectiveness is achieved in violation of peremptory norms, the emergence of statehood is precluded, thereby challenging a classical view of secession as purely factual and meta-legal. Dr. Júlia Miklasová coins the term “illegal secessionist entity,” demonstrates the pervasive effects of the original illegality on the subsequent relations of such entities (purported diplomatic, treaty, economic relations, acts and laws) and outlines the overlapping regimes of the law of occupation, human rights law and duty of non-recognition. Post-Soviet secessionist entities result from an illegal use of force. They are thus prohibited from becoming States, and further consequences of their illegality apply.

Rhythm Changes: Jazz, Culture, Discourse explores the history and development of jazz, addressing the music, its makers, and its social and cultural contexts, as well as the various discourses – especially those of academic analysis and journalistic criticism – that have influenced its creation, interpretation, and reception. Tackling diverse issues, such as race, class, nationalism, authenticity, irony, parody, gender, art, commercialism, technology, and sound recording, the book’s perspective on artistic and cultural practices suggests new ways of thinking about jazz history. It challenges many established scholarly approaches in jazz research, providing a much-needed intervention in the current academic orthodoxies of Jazz Studies. Perhaps the most striking and distinctive aspect of the book is the extraordinary eclecticism of the wide-ranging but carefully chosen case studies and examples referenced throughout the text, from nineteenth century literature, through 1930s Broadway and film, to twentieth and twenty-first century jazz and popular music.

A new edition of a sports icon's memoir, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Kathrine Switzer's historic running of the Boston Marathon as the first woman to run. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially run what was then the all-male Boston Marathon, infuriating one of the event's directors who attempted to violently eject her. In one of the most iconic sports moments, Switzer escaped and finished the race. She made history-and is poised to do it again on the fiftieth anniversary of that initial race, when she will run the 2017 Boston Marathon at age 70. Now a spokesperson for Reebok, Switzer is also the founder of 261 Fearless, a foundation dedicated to creating opportunities for women on all fronts, as this groundbreaking sports hero has done throughout her life. "Kathrine Switzer is the Susan B. Anthony of women's marathoning."-Joan Benoit Samuelson, first Olympic gold medalist in the women's marathon

The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Architect your own benchmarks KEY FEATURES ● Learn implementation and design of Memcached. ● Understand programming practices and structures across open-source systems. ● Understand the principles of LRU cache management and slab allocation. ● Discover real-world applications of Memcached in industry giants. DESCRIPTION Open-source development has been the single most significant contributor to the development community, and the contributions are used across the IT landscape including corporations, universities, schools, etc. Despite being highly popular, contributing to open-source and navigating open-source systems has always been challenging. Some reasons could be that most open-source developers hold other day jobs, which might also be their regular work. Memcached is one of the largest commercially and non-commercially used caching systems in the IT world, with a relatively smaller codebase that enables developers to understand the basic skeletal of source code structures while enabling developers to hone their skills towards the development of high-quality production-grade, enterprise-ready open-source software. Most server-based technologies. Open-source development skills enable developers to understand the intricacies of softwares, enabling robust decision-making while choosing technologies over trends and making mature decisions on a day-to-day development basis. This book is for all programming enthusiasts and is designed to be a Source code 101 level book, but it can help developers elevate to architect-level decision-making as well as architects to make solid software decisions while building the systems. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN ● Uncover the secrets of Memcached, a high-performance caching system. ● Learn about security measures safeguarding Memcached's integrity and scalability. ● Understand large-scale use cases of Memcached and how to continue further study of open source systems. ● Students can learn the implementation of most concepts through their journey with a practical approach. WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR This book is designed for software developers, system administrators, and IT professionals who want to delve into the world of Memcached, a high-performance caching system. It is a comprehensive guide to Memcached's architecture, design, and implementation for all programming enthusiasts. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Source Code Explorations in Open-Source Systems 2.
