Analyses how Black music and culture framed how we passed the time in the first 18 months of the pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, music listening increased as people used it to help to counter the psychological fallout of lockdown and reduce its effects of isolation, restriction and boredom. At the same time, concerts and other musical events moved online, and even when lockdown eased, social distancing meant that group musical and cultural events took on a different format. With a focus on contemporary Black music, this book takes a deep dive into a few of the various forms that popular culture took over this period, including Kano's Newham Talks series; Steve McQueen's BBC anthology Small Axe; the Verzuz DJ Battle series; TikTok's Don't Rush Challenge; radio station theresnosignal; and many more. An attempt to make sense of chronological and kairotic time in the early era of the pandemic, this book explores the way that Black joy and sonic Black geographies were key to the culture of this period, and how Black music and Black creative expression soundtracked and sustained us during the pandemic.

"A woman receives an unexpected call from a former classmate asking for help deciphering a puzzling interaction, and from there, Smith spins out a broader story about loneliness, refuge and freedom.” —The New York Times Book Review “Lyrical and timely…Smith’s novel will push readers to consider what it means to let people into your life, even when you don’t want to.” —TIME A story is never an answer. A story is always a question. A day spent locked in a room by border officials without any explanation as to why. A riddle that seemingly has no answer: curlew or curfew, you choose. A phone call from a college friend who hasn't been in touch in years. And all of it is somehow inextricably linked to the life of a young blacksmith hounded from her trade and branded a vagrant nearly 500 years ago. Award-winning author Ali Smith shines a guiding light through the nightmarish now with a provocative novel that intertwines our atomized present and the uncannily parallel era of the Black Plague. In the hope that our medieval past may unlock the answers we seek to understand our hazy future, Companion Piece is a kaleidoscope of human history and experience, and a stunning addition to Smith's gorgeous canon.

Hybrid working on a large scale arrived suddenly with the COVID-19 pandemic. And it’s here to stay. Going beyond the quick-fix solutions that emerged during the transition, this book takes a deeper, systems approach to leading a hybrid organisation to help managers understand the real, ‘beneath the surface’ issues in hybrid working. Established ways of managing everyday problems, such as workflow, communication and performance management, now seem inadequate when some members of staff are in the office and others are working remotely. In addition to day-to-day management tasks, there are also more complex challenges such as developing a cohesive team and organisational culture and a strong attachment to the organisation. Drawing on contemporary management theory, behavioural science, psychoanalysis and social psychology, the book explains the impacts and how to address areas such as: team and organisational identity; recruitment and retention of talent; personality and hybrid working; team dynamics; performance management; security and insider risk; well-being, burnout and engagement; diversity equality and inclusion; ESG; and handling conflict. This engaging book empowers leaders and managers by enabling them to understand the dynamics of hybrid working, and giving them the tools to influence these processes to improve their effectiveness in the organisation.
