Excerpt from Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne and the Convention of Saratoga: One Hundred Years Ago; A Paper Read Before the American Antiquarian Society on the 22d of October, 1877 At the annual meeting of the American Antiquarian Society, held at Worcester, Massachusetts, on the 22d of October, 1877, the following paper was read as a part of the Report of the Council. After noticing the principal occurrences which immediately related to the Society itself during the previous six months, the writer proceeded as follows: - Passing from what relates to the immediate concerns of the Society itself, I may be permitted now, agreeably to custom, to indulge in some historical theme; for the treatment of which, and for the opinions expressed, the writer is alone responsible. The nation for the last few years has been passing through a series of centennial eras; and the historical events which they mark have been commemorated anew, alike by pen and tongue. These events, connected with our revolutionary struggle, witnessed the birth of the nation, and contributed to bring it into existence.
