Symmetry plays an important role in theoretical physics, applied analysis, classical differential equations, and bifurcation theory. Although numerical analysis has incorporated aspects of symmetry on an ad hoc basis, there is now a growing collection of numerical analysts who are currently attempting to use symmetry groups and representation theory as fundamental tools in their work. This book contains the proceedings of an AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, held in 1992 at Colorado State University. The seminar, which drew about 100 scientists from around the world, was intended to stimulate the systematic incorporation of symmetry and group theoretical concepts into numerical methods. The papers in this volume have been refereed and will not be published elsewhere.

Today Lie group theoretical approach to differential equations has been extended to new situations and has become applicable to the majority of equations that frequently occur in applied sciences. Newly developed theoretical and computational methods are awaiting application. Students and applied scientists are expected to understand these methods. Volume 3 and the accompanying software allow readers to extend their knowledge of computational algebra. Written by the world's leading experts in the field, this up-to-date sourcebook covers topics such as Lie-Bäcklund, conditional and non-classical symmetries, approximate symmetry groups for equations with a small parameter, group analysis of differential equations with distributions, integro-differential equations, recursions, and symbolic software packages. The text provides an ideal introduction to modern group analysis and addresses issues to both beginners and experienced researchers in the application of Lie group methods.

This book proceeds beyond the representation theory of compact Lie groups (which is the basis of many texts) and offers a carefully chosen range of material designed to give readers the bigger picture. It explores compact Lie groups through a number of proofs and culminates in a "topics" section that takes the Frobenius-Schur duality between the representation theory of the symmetric group and the unitary groups as unifying them.

Nolan Wallach's mathematical research is remarkable in both its breadth and depth. His contributions to many fields include representation theory, harmonic analysis, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, number theory, differential equations, Riemannian geometry, ring theory, and quantum information theory. The touchstone and unifying thread running through all his work is the idea of symmetry. This volume is a collection of invited articles that pay tribute to Wallach's ideas, and show symmetry at work in a large variety of areas. The articles, predominantly expository, are written by distinguished mathematicians and contain sufficient preliminary material to reach the widest possible audiences. Graduate students, mathematicians, and physicists interested in representation theory and its applications will find many gems in this volume that have not appeared in print elsewhere. The 2nd edition of LNM 523 is based on the two first authors' mathematical approach of this theory presented in its 1st edition in 1976. An entire new chapter on the current forefront of research has been added. Except for this new chapter and the correction of a few misprints, the basic material and presentation of the first edition has been maintained. At the end of each chapter the reader will also find notes with further bibliographical information.

The book presents the main approaches in study of algebraic structures of symmetries in models of theoretical and mathematical physics, namely groups and Lie algebras and their deformations. It covers the commonly encountered quantum groups (including Yangians). The second main goal of the book is to present a differential geometry of coset spaces that is actively used in investigations of models of quantum field theory, gravity and statistical physics. The third goal is to explain the main ideas about the theory of conformal symmetries, which is the basis of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The theory of groups and symmetries is an important part of theoretical physics. In elementary particle physics, cosmology and related fields, the key role is played by Lie groups and algebras corresponding to continuous symmetries. For example, relativistic physics is based on the Lorentz and Poincare groups, and the modern theory of elementary particles — the Standard Model — is based on gauge (local) symmetry with the gauge group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). This book presents constructions and results of a general nature, along with numerous concrete examples that have direct applications in modern theoretical and mathematical physics.
