How do library professionals talk about and refer to library users, and how is this significant? In recent decades, the library profession has conceived of users in at least five different ways, viewing them alternatively as citizens, clients, customers, guests, or partners. This book argues that these user metaphors crucially inform librarians' interactions with the public, and, by extension, determine the quality and content of the services received. The ultimate aim of this book is to provide library professionals with insights and tools for avoiding common pitfalls associated with false or professionally inadequate conceptions of library users.

Metaphors and exercises play an incredibly important part in the successful delivery of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These powerful tools go far in helping clients connect with their values and give them the motivation needed to make a real, conscious commitment to change. Unfortunately, many of the metaphors that clinicians use have become stale and ineffective. That’s why you need fresh, new resources for your professional library. In this breakthrough book, two ACT researchers provide an essential A-Z resource guide that includes tons of new metaphors and experiential exercises to help promote client acceptance, defusion from troubling thoughts, and values-based action. The book also includes scripts tailored to different client populations, and special metaphors and exercises that address unique problems that may sometimes arise in your therapy sessions. Several ACT texts and workbooks have been published for the treatment of a variety of psychological problems. However, no one resource exists where you can find an exhaustive list of metaphors and experiential exercises geared toward the six core elements of ACT. Whether you are treating a client with anxiety, depression, trauma, or an eating disorder, this book will provide you with the skills needed to improve lives, one exercise at a time. With a special foreword by ACT cofounder Steven C. Hayes, PhD, this book is a must-have for any ACT Practitioner.

'...Material presented here is replete with concrete new ideas not only for collaboration, but also for funding, training, personal involvement, Web-based instruction, and other concepts too numerous to mention. And the best thing about these ideas is that they are not the usual endlessly-discussed theories_these are ideas that have worked_and some which have failed_in the real world...Despite the myriad new works available today related to library instruction in general and information literacy in particular, none is devoted solely to collaborative efforts between teaching faculty and librarians. This is where Library User Education: Powerful Learning, Powerful Partnerships shines_just as in the real world, it's all about collaboration.' _Angela Weiler, Portal

Metaphors show students how to make connections between the concrete and the abstract, prior knowledge and unfamiliar concepts, and language and image. But teachers must learn how to use metaphors and analogies strategically and for specific purposes, helping students discover and deconstruct effective comparisons. Metaphors & Analogies is filled with provocative illustrations of metaphors in action and practical tips.

Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries exploit the power of human vision and spatial cognition to help individuals mentally organize and electronically access and manage large and complex information spaces. They draw on progress in the field of information visualization and seek to shift the users' mental load from slow reading to faster perceptual processes such as visual pattern recognition. Based on two workshops, the book presents an introductory overview as well as a closing listing of the top ten problems in the area by the volume editors. Also included are 16 thoroughly reviewed and revised full papers organized in topical sections on visual interfaces to documents, document parts, document variants, and document usage data; visual interfaces to image and video documents; visualization of knowledge domains; cartographic interfaces to digital libraries; and a general framework.

We welcome you to the Second International Conference on E commerce and Web Technology (ECWEB 2001) held in conjunction with DEXA 2001 in Munich, Germany. This conference, now in its second year, is a forum to bring together researchers from academia and commercial developers from industry to discuss the state of the art in E commerce and web technology and explore new ideas. We thank you all for coming to Munich to participate and debate the new emerging advances in this area. The research presentation and discussion during the conference will help to exchange new ideas among the researchers, developers, and practitioners. The conference program consists of an invited talk by Hannes Werthner, University of Trento, Italy, as well as the technical sessions. The regular sessions cover topics from XML Transformations and Web Development to User Behavior and Case Studies. The workshop has attracted more than 80 papers and each paper has been reviewed by at least 3 program committee members for its merit. The program committee have selected 31 papers for presentation. We would like to express our thanks to the people who helped put together the technical program: the program committee members and external reviewers for their timely and rigorous reviews of the papers, the DEXA organizing committee for their help in administrative work and support, and special thanks to Gabriela Wagner for always responding promptly.
