The development of networking technology has gone hand in hand with trends for resource sharing among libraries. Strategies to share materials, research, and technology have given rise to technology-based consortia in the library community. This volume introduces models and case studies of groups of libraries and library systems using technology to better their patron services. Technical questions, administrative issues, and relations between groups of libraries and academic computing organizations, are among the many issues addressed by a variety of librarians from a range of different computing environments.

Libraries are burdened with increased demand for resources and services and inflating expectations against shrinking or stagnant budgets. An individual library cannot cope with the situation. Hence, libraries form alliances for cooperation and sharing. Emerging changes in the publishing industry are phenomenal and have forced libraries to move toward a strategic partnership called library consortia. Information technology has played a vital role in developing such partnerships. Publishers offer packages of resources to library consortia benefitting all member libraries. Library consortia protect the interests of individual members while considering the business interests of publishers. This book is a start-up guide to libraries and librarians desiring to form library consortia. It covers the various facets of library consortia and corresponding activities. The chapters are presented with different consortia models, formations, business negotiations and various licensing schemes. - presents a detailed guide and criteria for establishing library consortia - discusses consortia models in detail, with examples - includes examples of staff patterns and governance issues of library consortia - provides examples of different licensing and pricing models

No library stands alone. A long-standing tenet of the discipline, library cooperation predates the founding of ALA. Although these are times of crisis and uncertainty for library consortia (by one count, more than 65 consortia have closed since 2008), the collaboration that consortia offer helps libraries extend the value of every dollar spent. With over 35 years of experience managing five different library consortia between them, Horton and Pronevitz are uniquely qualified to show how consortia have been transforming themselves, offering new services and products while growing ever more important to the library community. Covering the history, current landscape, management approaches, critical trends, and key services that define today’s library consortia, they Highlight the current trends impacting consortia and the fiscal difficulties many have experienced since the 2007-2009 RecessionPresent conclusions drawn from sixteen case studies and the results of a recent survey on consortial environment and priorities Look into current management practices and give an overview of consortia activities, such as such as e-book technology and delivery methodsDiscuss the Discover to Delivery continuum, a key trend that allows libraries to maximize services This book will help new library staff understand the full range of activities that take place in today’s consortia, while also showing consortia managers, participants in consortial governance, and participating libraries methods for revising current practices, places for expanding services, and adopting new project ideas.

The book deals with resource sharing through consortium approach. During 1990s, due to journals crisis, emergence of scholarly electronic publishing, shift in print form to electronic version, escalation of costs of journals, all have compelled library professionals to move towards a strategic relationship in forming consortium by taking advantage of emerging new technologies. To begin with, resource sharing is briefed covering library cooperation. Emergence of electronic publishing has facilitated subscription to e-journals, access and delivery mechanisms. With proliferation of e-resources, constraints of copyright laws and licensing, library consortia have emerged with a sole aim of moving from organizational self sufficiency to a collaborative survival mode. There are several consortia types/models at organization level, types of libraries participating and parent organizations depending upon coverage of subject areas and purpose of coming together. The very purpose of consortia is to deal with pricing and licensing by means of negotiations and strike a deal suitable for stakeholders. With growth of different consortia in a country or region, it is desirable to coordinate all such efforts and look for National Consortium and go for National Site Licensing. Publishers were also providing bundled or ‘big deal’ offers which could solve journals crisis but not budget constraints as faced by libraries. With experience gained in forming consortia, library professionals also gained enough skills for negotiations which bring about win-win-situation to all stakeholders. In order to implement consortia activities, it is required to have minimum infrastructure including access to Internet, e-mail service, IP addresses, networking, archiving, etc. Also, the consortia should have some standards/ protocols such as COUNTER/SUSHI and SERU to run activities effectively. It is also important to look into archiving needs of consortia on a long term basis as publishers’ perpetual access suffer from trust factors, as a result of which some international agencies have emerged. It is also worth looking for consortia migration and merger in order to make better use of available information and enhance consortia interests on a much larger scales. There have been concerted efforts in India in forming consortia and a brief of each consortium is given followed by experiences gained which created confidence and strength to run consortia on a sustainable basis.

A significant shift is taking place in libraries, with the purchase of e-resources accounting for the bulk of materials spending. Electronic Resource Management makes the case that technical services workflows need to make a corresponding shift toward e-centric models and highlights the increasing variety of e-formats that are forcing new developments in the field.Six chapters cover key topics, including: technical services models, both past and emerging; staffing and workflow in electronic resource management; implementation and transformation of electronic resource management systems; the role of the electronic resource librarian in discovery systems, layers and tools; and academic library consortia and the evolving role of electronic resources and technology. The leading chapters include case studies from around the world, and a concluding chapter focuses on the disruptive nature of e-books and how broad adoption of this format is emerging as the tipping point towards holistic 'resource management', where separate technical services processes for print and electronic resources are finally merged. - An emphasis on 'access' within the new technical services model - Focuses on the unique attributes of electronic resource management that are distinct from traditional print serials workflows - Covers consortia and how membership affects electronic resource management workflows, priorities, and technical processes

A library is a collection of information sources, resources, and services: it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. This collection and services are used by people who choose not to — or cannot afford to purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research
