Excerpt from Liberty and Life Discourses Evolution has brought us to face such new views of life, and of our responsibility as the finality of the animal kingdom, and inheritors of an eternal evolution of organic and functional power, that we must recast our views of sin altogether. Henceforth, if I do not mistake the drift, sin will be held to be not a personal affront to a Creator, but a course of action that degrades ourselves in either body or mind, and that tends to degeneration. We are placed in charge of ourselves by the fact of self-consciousness; and the sum of all duty is so to use ourselves as to be in every function honest, wholesome and regenerative. Liberty is not a power to act as we choose, but to live in fullest accord with Him "in whom we live and move and have our being." This book is offered cordially to those who desire only that liberty which broadens and intensifies existence. It is in some sense supplementary to my book "Our Heredity from God;" and I am confident that readers of that volume will not misunderstand me. I cannot but think this a real improvement deserving Of general adoption. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Freedom and Liberty In July 1916 I published an essay under the title of 'Freedom'. Its aim was purely ethical; that is, to show that, for the purposes of human evolution, each of the two opposites, law, or organic control, and liberty, or life, was of equal importance: that there can be no continued growth of the race as a whole without an equal growth of each of these conflicting principles. Beyond this conclusion I was unable to go. I recognized that as a system my philosophy was incomplete. It failed to provide the single final end without which the deduction of ethical values is impossible. But, at the time, I had little hope of carrying the inquiry further, and I published the results, as far as they went, in a cheap form, to preserve them from oblivion. In my previous writings I had indicated that the universal final end of ethics must be found in religion, and there only. Excerpt from The Value of the Intellectual Life: A Discourse The purpose of my discourse this morning is to interpret to you the legend of the stained glass window which has been placed in the north front of this church, in loving memory of John H. Smyth, and to draw from it the permanent lessons of truth and beauty which it seeks to convey to our souls. It is proper that I begin with some account of the man whom this beautiful work of Christian art commemorates. John H. Smyth was horn in 1830 in Dublin, Ireland, lie came of energetic and sturdy Scotch-Irish stock. In his infancy his parents emigrated to the New World. His education was gained in Quebec, and later at the Jesuit College in Montreal, where lie graduated as a student of the law. He shortly after removed to Milwaukee, where he was admitted to the bar. The talented young lawyer, full of energy and ambition, longed for a larger field for the development of his powers. Accordingly, in 1862 he came to San Francisco. Excerpt from Liberty, Equality, Fraternity My dear Strachey, I dedicate this book to you for three reasons: First, as an expression of strong personal regard, and of deep gratitude for great kindness, all the more valuable because it resembled that which I received from everyone with whom I had any relations in India. Secondly, in recollection of the month, after the arrival at Calcutta of the news of Lord Mayo's murder, when you acted as Governor-General. Excerpt from Counsel and Encouragement: Discourses on the Conduct of Life Editors have not felt at liberty to make the changes which he, probably, would have made in revising them for the press. This fact will account for the repetition of some words, and for some expressions, which it will be seen were used in his familiar talk with his people without any thought of their being given to the public generally. Yet, on this account, the volume may be none the less acceptable to his friends, and perhaps the discourses, just as he delivered them, will the better represent the man in his familiar and affectionate inter course with his people. What role should religion play in shaping and implementing U.S. foreign policy? The dominant attitude over the last half century on the subject of religion and international relations was expressed well by Dean Acheson, Harry Truman's secretary of state: "Moral Talk was fine preaching for the Final Day of Judgment, but it was not a view I would entertain as a public servant." Was Acheson right? How a nation "commits itself to freedom" has long been at the heart of debates about foreign aid, economic sanctions, and military intervention. Moral and faith traditions have much to say about what is required to achieve this end. And after September 11, no one can doubt the importance of religious beliefs in influencing relations among peoples and nations. The contributors to this volume come at the issue from very different perspectives and offer exceptional and unexpected insights on a question now at the forefront of American foreign policy.
