“Elizabeth Blackwell is a story-telling genius. Her mesmerizing writing weaves a spell that will enchant you. While Beauty Slept breathes new life into the fairytale genre with a historical twist that will take your breath away.” —Meg Cabot, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Princess Diaries and Heather Wells mystery series I am not the sort of person about whom stories are told. Those of humble birth suffer their heartbreaks and celebrate their triumphs unnoticed by the bards, leaving no trace in the fables of their time… And so begins Elise Dalriss’s story. When she hears her great-granddaughter recount a minstrel’s tale about a beautiful princess asleep in a tower, it pushes open a door to the past, a door Elise has long kept locked. For Elise was the companion to the real princess who slumbered—and she is the only one left who knows what actually happened so many years ago. As the memories start to unfold, Elise is plunged back into the magnificent world behind the palace walls she left behind more than a half century ago, a labyrinth where the secrets of her real father and the mysterious fate of her mother connect to an inconceivable evil. Elise has guarded these secrets for a lifetime. As only Elise understands all too well, the truth is no fairy tale.

On My Own is a sequel to the books, The Day the Dream Changed and While Youre Making Plans. Ricks somewhat mysterious father dies, and the truth about much of his fathers life comes to light. The bond that existed between father and son, developed in the later years, centered around a certain loneliness they both experienced despite being surrounded by loving friends and family. Truth will soon be a key as to why that was the case. Ricks family continues to face life-threatening challenges, but the love and the training they had received from Ricks mysterious father helps them to face those challenges and survive. The real life cultural and geographical references make for an interesting read. The gifts of true friendship, the comfort and protection of true family life and loyalty continue to be a theme in this book as in the others. As the exciting events unfold, readers will find many good things that come from understanding the human experience as it oft times is. The saying, repeated often in all three of these books, It Is What It Is takes on a meaning of its Own.

“A valuable publication . . . A social historical case study of the conflicts of conscience experienced by countless families during the Civil War” (Civil War Books and Authors). When war broke out in 1861, Christian and Elise Dubach Isely, soon to be married, found themselves in the midst of the conflict. Having witnessed the atrocities of Bleeding Kansas firsthand and fearful of what would come from this war, Christian enlisted with the 2nd Kansas Cavalry to fight alongside Union forces. During the next three years, the couple would write hundreds of letters to each other, as well as to friends and family members. Their writings survive today, providing a unique look at the Civil War—one of both military and civilian perspectives—in a passionate exchange between husband and wife in which the war, faith, and family are discussed openly and frankly.
