Poisoned as the public mind has been towards me, by the machinations of one or two unprincipled scoundrels, I cannot flatter myself that my vindication will have that general weight to which it is justly entitled; but with those who are personally acquainted with the character that I have sustained, during a period of twelve years of public service, I confidently believe no doubts will remain of the purity and propriety of my conduct, or the baseness of the majority if the tribunal before which I was tried.
