This fourth volume in the series Physics and Evolution of the Earth's Interior, provides a comprehensive review of the geophysical and geodetical aspects related to gravity and low-frequency geodynamics. Such aspects include the Earth's gravity field, geoid shape theory, and low-frequency phenomena like rotation, oscillations and tides.Global-scale phenomena are treated as a response to source excitation in spherical Earth models consisting of several shells: lithosphere, mantle, core and sometimes also the inner solid core. The effect of gravitation and rotation on the Earth's shape is analysed. The satellite approach to studies of the gravity field and the geoid shape is discussed in some detail. Discussions of recent findings and developments are accompanied by a brief historical background.

The IUGG Upper Mantle Committee has stated that the hypothesis of continental drift envisages horizontal displacements of the continents over th- sands of kilometers, and that it is a principal objective of the Upper Mantle Project to prove whether or not continental drift has occurred. The origin of the hypothesis may be traced to the close similarity in outlines of the coasts on the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The theory that the eastern and western hemispheres are drifting apart was expounded in particular by A. Wegener. Modern geophysical theories seek to explain paleomagnetic observations by - suming that two things have occurred in the past: (a) large-scale polar wandering, and (b) continental drift. A direct confirmation of drift, if it exists, is greatly desired. Attempts have been made to prove that continental drift has occurred from - served changes in latitude and longitude. It was thought by some, in fact, that such changes had been detected.

Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume X: The Fifth Meeting and the Termination of CSAGI reflects the activities at the Fifth Meeting of the CSAGI concerning the World Days, meteorology, geomagnetism, aurora, airglow, and ionosphere. This work also covers other IGY activities and observations related to solar activity, cosmic rays, latitudes, longitudes, glaciology, oceanography, rockets, satellites, seismology, gravimetry, and nuclear radiation. This book also provides information on the termination of the CSAGI and the formation of the special committee for the inter-union cooperation in geophysics. This book will be of value to geophysicists, historians, and researchers.
