Urban Drainage: A Multilingual Glossary has been written by research engineers and scientists with substantial experience in the urban drainage field. It provides definitive descriptions of urban drainage terms in English, French, Japanese and German, giving guidance on their appropriate usage and context. The glossary also contains many diagrams, tables and technical discussions, and is a very practical tool to facilitate international technical communication in the urban drainage field. Containing well over 850 commonly-used terms in urban drainage, all expressed in a user-friendly manner, the book serves as a valuable resource for both practitioner and academic. Topics covered include: urban hydrology/hydraulics sewerage surface water runoff pollution (groundwater and surface) receiving waters ecology ecotoxicology best management practices urban water resource management Urban Drainage: A Multilingual Glossary represents an initiative of the joint IWA/IAHR Committee on Urban Drainage and has arisen out of the long-standing terminological and tautological difficulties of many terms in common usage within international urban drainage practice. It will be of great use and interest to scientists, engineers and ecologists, professionals and students working in urban hydrology/hydraulics, urban water resource management and regulation, urban planning and ecology.

Water Resources Management VIII contains papers presented at the eighth conference in a biennial series organised by the Wessex Institute. First held in 2001, the Conference includes the work of scientists, practitioners and other experts regarding the sustainable management of water resources. It is predicted that population growth and irregular precipitation due to climate change may lead to more restrict ed access to water in certain regions of the world. The problem will be aggravated by human activities that affect the quality of available water. In order to improve strategies for dealing with a scarcity of potable water, it is important to review and compare the performance of current technologies and practices in order to select those that will provide the most effective approaches. It is also important that technologies and practices be able to respond with agility to changing conditions. New ways of thinking are required in order to successfully predict future trends and prepare adequate sustainable solutions. The papers included in this book cover such topics as: Water Management and Planning; Water Rights and Accessibility; Water Markets and Policies; Climate Change; Irrigation; Urban Water Management; Hydraulic Engineering; Water Quality; Pollution Contaminants and Control; River Basin Management; Flood Risk Management; Geo-politics of Water; Water Resources and Economics; Governance and Regulations; Desalination; Water Services.

Drinking Water Distribution, Sewage, and Rainfall Collection (Back cover) Drinking Water Distribution, Sewage, and Rainfall Collection is the first textbook produced in French and English entirely devoted to practical hydraulic problems as they occur in modern cities. It looks at the design and application of equipment for drinking water distribution, runoff and sewage collection. Fundamental hydraulic principles are presented clearly and their application is illustrated in examples representative of real-world situations. Exercises and problems enable students to test their knowledge in each chapter. Specific topics include the measurement of sewage flow, sewage pumping stations, pump selection, inverted siphon, and characteristics of pipes available on the market in a wide variety of materials. The textbook also covers issues such as water hammer and other overpressures, dead and live loads, underground pipe installation, water supply to high rise buildings, the design of sewer and water service connections, water flows and volumes for fire fighting, water intake and intake pipes, fire hydrants, water inlets and valve settings on water networks, sewage outfall, pipe freezing and corrosion, thrust blocks and restrained joints, culverts, etc. One chapter is entirely devoted to waterborne diseases, chemical contaminants and dangerous gases that accumulate in enclosed spaces. Engineers, technicians and scientists can use the textbook to learn the basic requirements for designing and evaluating sanitary storm networks, sewage networks and water distribution networks. François G. Brière is a civil engineer and Professor in the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. He received his education in Québec and the United States and worked for the Ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions du Québec (Ministry of municipal and regional affairs of Québec) before entering academia, where he has taught water chemistry, sewage treatment and urban hydraulics for more than 30 years.

This book examines changes and transitions in the way water is managed in urban environments. This book originated from a joint French-Australian initiative on water and land management held in Montpellier, France. The book delivers practical insights into urban water management. It links scientific insights of researchers with the practical experiences of urban water practitioners to understand and respond to key trends in how urban water is supplied, treated and consumed. The 51 contributors to the volume provide a range of insights, case studies, summaries and analyses of urban water and from a global perspective. The first section on water supply and sanitation includes case studies from Zimbabwe, France and South Africa, among others. Water demand and water economics are addressed in the second section of the book, with chapters on long-term water demand forecasting, the social determinants of water consumption in Australian cities, a study of water quality and consumption in France, governance and regulation of the urban water sector and more. The third section explores water governance and integrated management, with chapters on water management in Quebec, in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond urban area, in Singapore and in Australia. The final section offers perspectives on challenges and future uncertainties for urban water systems in transition. Collectively, the diverse insights provide an important step forward in response to the challenges of sustainably delivering water safely, efficiently and equitably.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Integrated urban water management relies on data allowing us to analyse, understand and predict the behaviour of the individual water cycle components and their interactions. The concomitant monitoring of the complex of urban water system elements makes it possible to grasp the entirety of relations among the various components of the urban water cycle and so develop a holistic approach to solving urban water problems. Data Requirements for Integrated Urban Water Managements - issuing from UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme project on this topic - is geared towards improving integrated urban water management by providing guidance on the collection, validation, storage, assessment and utilization of the relevant data. The first part of this volume describes general principles for developing a monitoring programme in support of sustainable urban water management. The second part examines in detail the monitoring of individual water cycle components. Two case studies in the final part illustrating attempts to deliver an integrated monitoring system help demonstrate the fundamental principles of sustainable urban water management elaborated here.
