__________________ Our Earth is more beautiful and more diverse than we can possibly conceive of. The Book of Vanishing Species is a stunning homage to the planet's most mysterious, bizarre and wondrous creatures and plants. Their stories are captivating, from the eyeless and tiny dragonlike olm to the hawksbill turtle, whose gender will be determined by the temperature of the sand it is born in. These species may have survived for hundreds of thousands of years by cleverly adapting to their environments, but their future remains far from certain. The book brings to life red cranes as they dance and bow for the sheer joy of movement, trees that breathe out a haze of misty atmosphere for insects that only feast on one kind of flower, a deep-ocean snail quietly building its shell from iron... and each one of them is illuminated with an exquisite illustration. As you turn the pages, there emerges a network of life that stretches across and around the planet in a dazzling web of existence. This is both a love letter to life on Earth, and an urgent summons to protect what is precious and lovely in this world.

This book focuses on key themes in a young animal’s life: birth and the very first days of life, learning to hunt and feed, senses and communication, habitat and adaptation, and playtime. Full of beautiful pictures and fascinating science, Born to Be Wild reveals the mysteries of how young creatures survive in an unpredictable world.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Inside of a Dog and The Year of the Puppy, an eye-opening, informative, “entertaining, and enlightening” (BookPage) celebration of the human-canine relationship for the curious dog owner and science-lover alike. We keep dogs and are kept by them. We love dogs and (we assume) we are loved by them. We buy them sweaters, toys, shoes; we are concerned with their social lives, their food, and their health. The story of humans and dogs is thousands of years old but is far from understood. In Our Dogs, Ourselves, Alexandra Horowitz explores all aspects of this unique and complex relationship that “dog lovers will savor and absorb” (Shelf Awareness). As Horowitz considers the current culture of dogdom, she reveals the odd, surprising, and contradictory ways we live with dogs. We celebrate their individuality but breed them for sameness. Despite our deep emotional relationships with dogs, legally they are property to be bought, sold, abandoned, or euthanized as we wish. Even the way we speak to our dogs is at once perplexing and delightful. In thirteen thoughtful and charming chapters, Our Dogs, Ourselves affirms our profound affection for this most charismatic of animals—and makes us “see canine companions in new ways” (Science News).

Getting from here to there may be simple for one individual. But as any parent, scout leader, or CEO knows, herding a whole troop in one direction is a lot more complicated. Who leads the group? Who decides where the group will travel, and using what information? How do they accomplish these tasks? On the Move addresses these questions, examining the social, cognitive, and ecological processes that underlie patterns and strategies of group travel. Chapters discuss how factors such as group size, resource distribution and availability, the costs of travel, predation, social cohesion, and cognitive skills affect how individuals as well as social groups exploit their environment. Most chapters focus on field studies of a wide range of human and nonhuman primate groups, from squirrel monkeys to Turkana pastoralists, but chapters covering group travel in hyenas, birds, dolphins, and bees provide a broad taxonomic perspective and offer new insights into comparative questions, such as whether primates are unique in their ability to coordinate group-level activities.

In Ways of Nature, Dr. Décossard articulates the first theory of evolution since Darwin. By his own account, he stumbled upon his proposed mechanism of eukaryogenesis using a process worthy of the three princes of Serendip. From there, he succeeded in establishing a comprehensive theory of life and the universe. For instance, we learn that a new paradigm, called “ the seeds-first theory,” explains biodiversity among eukaryotic species, such as those of plants and animals. It is interesting to discover what contributions, if any, the theory of natural selection provided to the new model. Nevertheless, the modern version of Darwinism, or neo-Darwinism, has long been engaged in a major antagonism with the theory of Intelligent Design (ID), which holds that the living world emanated from the conscious choice of a designer rather than chance events. In any case, the author will be the first one to admit that the new model of evolution delineated in this opus is not born out of the crisis that is currently rocking neo-Darwinism, a crisis sparked by the assaults of many thinkers and scientists, including those of the ID movement. He is also quick to reveal how little he knew about the standoff between the two main protagonists in the crisis of the theory of natural selection before he began work on this book, cloistered as he was both literally and figuratively within the confines of emergency rooms caring for the sick and injured. In Ways of Nature, Dr. Décossard explores the paths taken by life since its apparition and shines a bright spotlight on its destiny and the fate of the universe. In so doing, he also identifies the connections between the living and the nonliving and opens our eyes to novel ideas about physical phenomena whose conventional descriptions we thought were settled. Ways of Nature is undoubtedly a landmark publication. It is indeed a paradigm shift à la Kuhn in our understanding of life and its evolution.
