Excerpt from Lectures and Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 With these two volumes of Lectures and Essays I complete the task laid upon me by Canon Ainger's executors of editing his literary remains and I take the opportunity afforded by this preface to thank them for allowing me a free hand in the choice of what seemed best to publish, and to express the hope that I have not done my friend's reputation a disservice by printing or reprinting anything that he himself would have preferred to let die. Excerpt from Miscellanea, Vol. 2 of 2: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, and Essays, on Historical, Theological, and Miscellaneous Subjects; Theological and Miscellaneous Still we are not satisfied. We are always in a restless fever Of agitation and excitement. We are never at rest, but when we are in motion. We forget what is past, and we bend forward to what is future. Past dis coveries, great and magnificent as they are, are all counted as nothing; we anticipate something much more brilliant in the future. The surface Of society is like that of the ocean lashed into foamy billows by the winds Of heaven. But, unlike the sea, we are never at rest. The great charac teristic Of the age is progress. We must progress in every thing; in the arts, in the sciences, in legislation, in philosophy, and even in religion! We are always looking restlessly ahead. Inventions, which once dazzled the world with their brilliancy and promise Of usefulness, have been long since superseded and forgotten. The cumbrous and imperfect steamboat machinery Of Blasco de Garay and Of Biancas were superseded by the more simple and manageable apparatus Of Fulton; While this too, in its turn, has given way to the more available methods suggested by recent discoveries. Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2 By spiritual death I mean the entire loss in the soul of those principles of holiness which fitted man originally for fellowship with God as his chief joy, his happiness, his life. It is death to all those spiritual sensibilities of holy love which constituted the blessedness of the paradisaical life while man remained in his innocence, and a consequent total incapacity for the functions and enjoyments of that life. By temporal death I mean, of course, the dissolution, by whatever means effected, of the soul and the body, and the corruption of the latter in the grave, its return to the dust from which it was taken. By death eternal, I understand what is called in Scripture "the second death," the everlasting misery of the future state. A few remarks will be necessary on each of these. I. Against the idea of spiritual death being included in the curse, two objections have been urged - (1.) It has been alleged that spiritual death is nothing more than sin, and that this is therefore to make sin its own penalty; and by supposing God to inflict it makes Him its author. But here there is a double mistake. Is there no difference between falling into sin, and being left, in consequence, to a permanently depraved state of soul, a state of alienation from God and of incapacity for enjoying Him? The only question is: - Whether, in consequence of the original transgression, the nature of man was left in this state? That it was, we formerly endeavoured at great length to prove, from Scripture and from facts. Now, if this was a consequence, what else could it be than a penal and judicial consequence? Excerpt from Lectures on Modern History, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Irruption of the Northern Nations to the Close of the American Revolution In the extracts furnished by, Mr. Macpherson, little cem ment can be found on what are known to be the most critical points of the history of the times; and on the whole, as far as the reign of Charles is concerned, the reader is extremely disappointed in the matter and in the manner, in the author and in the editor of this journal or narrative, as exhibited by Macpherson. Excerpt from Academical Lectures and Pulpit Discourses, Vol. 2 Respecting the relations and consequences of the gospel remedy to other orders of creatures, we are almost entirely uninformed. The scripture gives some intimations on the subject, but they are few and indis tinct, and have been, not improperly, represented as presenting only a faint opening, through which may be seen some few traces of a wider and a nobler dispensa tion as bringing before us a dim transparency, on the other side of which the images of an obscure magnifi cence dazzle indistinctly upon the eye.
