Consists of three chapters covering the following topics: foundations, bilinear forms and presentations of certain 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, discrete subgroups of the Heisenberg group, the automorphism group of the Heisenberg group, fundamental unitary representations of the Heisenberg group, and the Fourier transform and the Weil-Brezin map.

This book is based on a set of lectures presented by the author at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference, Applications of Operator Algebras to Knot Theory and Mathematical Physics, held at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1988. The audience consisted of low-dimensional topologists and operator algebraists, so the speaker attempted to make the material comprehensible to both groups. He provides an extensive introduction to the theory of von Neumann algebras and to knot theory and braid groups. The presentation follows the historical development of the theory of subfactors and the ensuing applications to knot theory, including full proofs of some of the major results. The author treats in detail the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials, introduces statistical mechanical methods on knot diagrams, and attempts an analogy with conformal field theory. Written by one of the foremost mathematicians of the day, this book will give readers an appreciation of the unexpected interconnections between different parts of mathematics and physics.

In recent years, there has been a great deal of activity in the study of boundary value problems with minimal smoothness assumptions on the coefficients or on the boundary of the domain in question. These problems are of interest both because of their theoretical importance and the implications for applications, and they have turned out to have profound and fascinating connections with many areas of analysis. Techniques from harmonic analysis have proved to be extremely useful in these studies, both as concrete tools in establishing theorems and as models which suggest what kind of result might be true. Kenig describes these developments and connections for the study of classical boundary value problems on Lipschitz domains and for the corresponding problems for second order elliptic equations in divergence form. He also points out many interesting problems in this area which remain open.

This volume has three chief objectives: 1) the determination of local Euler factors on classical groups in an explicit rational form; 2) Euler products and Eisenstein series on a unitary group of an arbitrary signature; and 3) a class number formula for a totally definite hermitian form. Though these are new results that have never before been published, Shimura starts with a quite general setting. He includes many topics of an expository nature so that the book can be viewed as an introduction to the theory of automorphic forms of several variables, Hecke theory in particular. Eventually, the exposition is specialized to unitary groups, but they are treated as a model case so that the reader can easily formulate the corresponding facts for other groups. There are various facts on algebraic groups and their localizations that are standard but were proved in some old papers or just called well-known. In this book, the reader will find the proofs of many of them, as well as systematic expositions of the topics. This is the first book in which the Hecke theory of a general (nonsplit) classical group is treated. The book is practically self-contained, except that familiarity with algebraic number theory is assumed.

The last ten years have seen a number of significant advances in Hopf algebras. The best known is the introduction of quantum groups, which are Hopf algebras that arose in mathematical physics and now have connections to many areas of mathematics. In addition, several conjectures of Kaplansky have been solved, the most striking of which is a kind of Lagrange's theorem for Hopf algebras. Work on actions of Hopf algebras has unified earlier results on group actions, actions of Lie algebras, and graded algebras. This book brings together many of these recent developments from the viewpoint of the algebraic structure of Hopf algebras and their actions and coactions. Quantum groups are treated as an important example, rather than as an end in themselves. The two introductory chapters review definitions and basic facts; otherwise, most of the material has not previously appeared in book form. Providing an accessible introduction to Hopf algebras, this book would make an excellent graduate textbook for a course in Hopf algebras or an introduction to quantum groups.

Introduces some of the main ideas of modern intersection theory, traces their origins in classical geometry and sketches a few typical applications. Suitable for graduate students in mathematics, this book describes the construction and computation of intersection products by means of the geometry of normal cones.

The international symposium held in October 1984 at the Uni versity of Mannheim was the first with the special aim to expose the connection of the Theory of Delay Eauations and Approximation Theory with the emphasis on constructive methods and applications. Although the separate character of both domains is reflected by their historical development, the latest research shows that the numerical treatment of Delay Equations leads to various appro ximation and optimization problems. An introductory survey of this circle of problems written by the editors is included at the beginning of the book. Delay Equations have their origin in domains of applications, such as physics, engineering, biology, medicine and economics. They appear in connection with the fundamental problem to analyse a retarded process from the real world, to develop a corresponding mathematical model and to determine the future behavior. Thirty mathematicians attended the conference coming from Germany, West- and Eastern Europe and the United States- more than twenty of them presented a research talk. The lectures about Delay Equations were mainly oriented on the following subjects: single-step, multi-step and spline methods; monotonicity methods for error estimations; asymptotic behavior 10 and periodicity of solutions. The topics of the talks on Approxi mation Theory covered different aspects of approximation by poly nomials, splines and rational functions and their numerical rea lization. Additionally included in the scientific program was a special session on Open Problems, where several suggestions were made for further research concerning both fields.

This volume contains expository lectures by Melvin Hochster from the CBMS Regional Conference in Mathematics held at the University of Nebraska, June 1974. The lectures deal mainly with recent developments and still open questions in the homological theory of modules over commutative (usually, Noetherian) rings. A good deal of attention is given to the role ``big'' Cohen-Macaulay modules play in clearing up some of the open questions. A modest knowledge of commutative rings and familarity with (the long exact sequences for) Tor and Ext should suffice as a background for the reader.
