Excerpt from Laws, Regulations, Circulars, Orders, Decisions, Etc: Relating to the U. S. Naval Engineer Corps The Chief or Senior Engineer of a vessel is to be particularly careful to inspect the boilers under his charge frequently, and to note the same in the steam-log. Internal and external corrosion is to be carefully guarded against, by keeping all accessible parts of the boilers thoroughly painted, particularly the bottoms and ash-pits, and not allowing water from the deck to drip on, or wet swabs or other wet substances to be placed upon them; and by keeping the boilers empty and dry when not in or required for use, and expelling the dampness by means of stoves or gentle fires lighted in the ash-pits, from time to time, as required. In vessels fitted with surface condensers care is to be taken to carry the water in the boilers of sufficient density to form and retain a very thin scale on the interior surfaces of the iron. On no occasion is any combustible to be placed on, or in contact with, the external surfaces of the boilers. The Engineer Officer at a Navy Yard having boilers under his charge intended for service will comply with the above instructions, but they do not apply to boilers that are to be repaired, undergoing repairs, or those of vessels (such as the light-draught monitors) not proposed to be again used.
