Excerpt from Among the Pines: Or South in Secession-Time As the embryo war-steamer rounded up to the long, low, rickety dock, lumbered breast-high with cotton, turpentine, and rosin, not a white face was to be seen. A few half-clad, shiftless-looking negroes, lounging idly about, were the only portion of the population in wait Ing to witness our landing. Excerpt from The Sanctuary: A Story of the Civil War The terrible were strangely mingled. Day after day I saw the symbol Of our national unity outspread by a thousand patriot hands, or when tossing amid the fray of battle, I have watched its surge as token of victory; and grander than all, as crowds Of refugees, white and black, sought its folds for protection and liberty, I no longer felt humiliated nor ashamed, for the flag Of our union symbolized to me, as it must to all the world, Liberty, in its widest, purest, noblest meaning. Excerpt from A Broken Sword: A Tale of the Civil War It was a soft, balmy April morning - early April at that - and New York in general, and Grace Church in particular, had been taken by surprise. Furs and heavy overcoats had been the vogue up to Friday night and, as noontide of Sunday drew near, and, with it, the climax of the Doctor's sermon, Brown, the big sexton, had thrown open the outer doors and was actually mopping his brow. Two young men stood chatting in subdued tone on the stone step at the main entrance when the heavy portals unexpectedly swung inward. Broadway at the moment was silent and well nigh deserted. None of the dozen "bus" lines profaned the Sabbath stillness of those days by jar of hoof or rumble of wheel upon the Russ pavement. Cabs and hansoms were unknown. A policeman sauntered along the opposite sidewalk in front of the St. Denis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from As I Saw It In reading over the personal memoirs Of U. S. Grant, in V0]. 1, page 252, some incidents Of the Civil War in Missouri, not touched upon by him, except in a merely allusive way, were brought to my mind, and as I am sure they have never appeared in print, I will endeavor to relate them as I saw them. History tells us of battles fought and number Of men killed and wounded, but it does not tell us of the camp life Of the soldier nor the pathetic, heroic and amusing incidents by which every battle or skirmish is attended. Excerpt from My Lady of the South: A Story of the Civil War Something burned my shoulder like a sudden spurt of flame; I felt sick from the shock, and clung desperately to the breech to keep from falling; I saw faces here and there amid the brown whirls of smoke, strange, unknown repulsive faces, rendered hideous from the strain of con flict; my gun toppled over, one wheel smashed into splin ters; I saw Wyatt turn and run for the rear, and Park hurst flung backward as though shot from a catapuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Award-winning historian Leonard L. Richards gives us an authoritative and revealing portrait of an overlooked harbinger of the terrible battle that was to come. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, Americans of all stripes saw the potential for both wealth and power. Among the more calculating were Southern slave owners. By making California a slave state, they could increase the value of their slaves—by 50 percent at least, and maybe much more. They could also gain additional influence in Congress and expand Southern economic clout, abetted by a new transcontinental railroad that would run through the South. Yet, despite their machinations, California entered the union as a free state. Disillusioned Southerners would agitate for even more slave territory, leading to the Kansas-Nebraska Act and, ultimately, to the Civil War itself.
