This book explores how states in political transition use stamps to promote a new visual nationalism. Stamps as products of the state and provide small pieces of information about a state’s heritage, culture, economies and place in the world. These depictions change over time, reflecting political and cultural changes and developments. The volume explores the transition times in more than a dozen countries from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. Specifically addressed are the stamp topics, issues and themes in the years before and after such major changes occurred, for example, from a European colony to political independence or from a dictatorship to democracy. The authors compare the personalities, histories, and cultural representations "before" the transition period and how the state used the "after" event to define or redefine its place on the world political map. The final three chapters consider international themes on many stamp issues, one being stamps with Disney cartoon characters, another on "themeless" Forever stamps, and the third on states celebrating women and their accomplishments. This volume has wide interdisciplinary relevance and should prove of particular interest to those studying geopolitics, political transition, visual nationalism, soft power and visual representations of decolonializing.

Interventionism—the manipulation of the internal politics of one country by another—has long been a feature of international relations. The practice shows no signs of abating, despite the recent collapse of Communism and the decline of the Cold War. In The Political Economy of Third World Intervention, David Gibbs explores the factors that motivate intervention, especially the influence of business interests. He challenges conventional views of international relations, eschewing both the popular "realist" view that the state is influenced by diverse national interests and the "dependency" approach that stresses conflicts between industrialized countries and the Third World. Instead, Gibbs proposes a new theoretical model of "business conflict" which stresses divisions between different business interests and shows how such divisions can influence foreign policy and interventionism. Moreover, he focuses on the conflicts among the core countries, highlighting friction among private interests within these countries. Drawing on U.S. government documents—including a wealth of newly declassified materials—he applies his new model to a detailed case study of the Congo Crisis of the 1960s. Gibbs demonstrates that the Crisis is more accurately characterized by competition among Western interests for access to the Congo's mineral wealth, than by Cold War competition, as has been previously argued. Kinshasa is sub-Saharan Africa‘s second largest city. The seven million Congolese who live there have a rich reputation for the courageous and innovative ways in which they survive in a harsh urban environment. They have created new social institutions, practices, networks and ways of living to deal with the collapse of public provision and a malfunctioning political system. This book describes how ordinary people, in the absence of formal sector jobs, hustle for a modest living; the famous ‘bargaining‘ system ordinary Kinois have developed; and how they access food, water supplies, health and education. The NGO-ization of service provision is analysed, as is the quite rare incidence of urban riots. The contributors also look at popular discourses, including street rumor, witchcraft, and attitudes to ‘big men‘ such as musicians and preachers. This is urban sociology at its best - richly empirical, unjargonized, descriptive of the lives of ordinary people, and weaving into its analysis how they see and experience life.

"Les contributions rassemblées dans ce volume, en mémoire au père jésuite Ludwig Bertsch (1929-2006), font le point sur quelques défis actuels de la théologie africaine. Ludwig Bertsch s. j. était un grand ami du Congo, pays qu’il a visité plusieurs fois. Il y a assuré des cours et a participé aux colloques scientifiques qui y ont été organisés. Pendant de longues années, il a été membre du Conseil administratif des Facultés catholiques de Kinshasa, aujourd’hui Université Catholique du Congo. Au sein de la communauté ecclésiale vivante de base Boyambi (paroisse Notre-Dame de Lingwala à Kinshasa), il a pu vivre de l’intérieur les retombées pratiques des initiatives pastorales déployées dans le diocèse de Kinshasa. Cette expérience sur le terrain lui a permis de publier en 1990 un ouvrage remarqué sur les dirigeants laïcs de communautés. L’expérience qu’il a poursuivie au gré de ses voyages et de ses nombreux contacts avec les agents pastoraux et les théologiens a nourri ses contributions scientifiques sur les communautés ecclésiales vivantes de base, les ministères laïcs, la liturgie et les tâches pastorales d’une Église congolaise authentique et inculturée, œuvrant dans une société en crise. Les contributions rassemblées dans ces Mélanges mettent en évidence le dynamisme de l’Église congolaise dont le père L. Bertsch se sentait un membre actif.
