This book is neither an indictment of the new family nor a rallying cry. It is a classical exercise of family sociology that draws upon a range of disciplines -- history, anthropology, psychology, and demography -- to provide an interpretive model for understanding contemporary changes in the family. It explores traditional family forms in order to identify changes that gave birth to the ideal type of the modern family, and it discusses how the modern family's constituent elements (the family as institution, conjugal and parent-child relationships, and gender and sexuality) relate to modernity's central feature -- the concept of the individual. By reconstructing an archetype of the modern family, this book explains why individuals have experienced its deconstruction as a profound identity crisis.

LES TRANSFORMATIONS CONTEMPORAINES DE LA FAMILLE ROMPENT LE MODELE SPECIFIQUEMENT MODERNE DE FAMILLE ET, PARTANT, SIGNALENT UN CHANGEMENT DE TYPE DE SOCIETE. LA FIGURE PARENTALE, UNIFIEE PAR LA FONCTION SOCIALISATRICE MODERNE, ECLATE AUJOURD'HUI SI BIEN QUE L'ENFANT EST APPELE A S'IDENTIFIER A SES PARENTS SEPAREMENT. IL A DEVANT LUI DES PERSONNALITES ET DOIT COMPOSER AVEC CELA. ALORS QUE LA FAMILLE MODERNE INAUGURE UN SOUCI INEDIT DE L'ENFANT, LES COUPLES CONTEMPORAINS DOUTENT QUE L'ENFANT AIT UNE PLACE DANS "LEUR" VIE. ON ASSISTE A UBE DESUBJECTIVISATION DE LA RELATION CONJUGALE. ENFIN, LE REFACONNEMENT SOCIALISATEUR DE LA DIFFERENCE DES GENRES EST ENTIEREMENT REMIS EN QUESTION. PUISQUE CES TRANSFORMATIONS AFFECTENT LA FAMILLE EN CE QU'ELLE A DE SPECIFIQUEMENT MODERNE, ELLES SIGNALENT LAFIN DE LA DYNAMIQUE MODERNE ET LE PASSAGE A UNE SOCIETE ET UNE FAMILLE POSTMODERNES. CE PASSAGE D'UN TYPE DE SOCIETE A UN AUTRE EST D'AILLEURS MANIFESTE DANS LE CARACTERE DE CRISE QUE PRENNENT CES CHANGEMENTS, POUR LA SOCIETE GLOBALE COMME POUR LES INDIVIDUS. The rise in individualism and the growing liberalism of family law may be seen as potential threats to the family as a unit. Currently, defenders of traditional family models are being forced to accept a more fluid definition of family as an intrinsic heterogeneous unit. Central to this book is the idea that the family, as a social unit around which society is structured, still plays a pivotal role in North America. States, courts, and political parties have had to address the major mutations of the family landscape in the last decades. The family is instrumental in reorganizing communities in migration contexts, and is a key component of political strategies. The way family is staged in the press, on social media, and in TV shows, reflects the fast-changing patterns and new realities of North American families, and offers alternatives to hegemonic representations of normative families. It also ranks high among current literary obsessions since it is the privileged receptacle for contemporary anxieties and operates both as an ideal retreat or an alienating space. The proliferation of family narratives, in their ever-shifting forms, reveals that family has boundless potential for fiction, and continues to run deep in the North American imaginary. This book gathers together approaches that range from field study, sociology, politics, media studies and literature. The contributions here show the centrality of the family both as an individual unit and as social, political, legal, and fictional constructs.

Multilingualism is a typical aspect of everyday life for most of the world’s population; it has existed since the beginning of humanity and among individuals of all backgrounds. Nonetheless, it has often been treated as a variant of bilingualism or as a phenomenon unique to individual areas of study. The purpose of this book is to review current knowledge about the acquisition, use and loss of multiple languages using a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting the common themes and stimulating insights that can emerge when multilingualism is viewed from different but related areas of investigation. The chapters focus on research evidence, showing that multilingualism is a complex phenomenon that involves a myriad of linguistic and extra-linguistic forces and that should be studied in its own right as evidence of human potential and capacity for language. The book is primarily addressed to students and scholars interested in deepening their understanding of the different facets of multilingualism, including the individual and societal circumstances that contribute to it, the cognitive and neural mechanisms that make it possible, and the dynamics involved in the acquisition, use and loss of multiple languages.

"The Canadian census taken in 1901 has surprising things to say about the family as a social grouping and cultural construct at the turn of the twentieth century. Although the nuclear-family household was the most frequent type of household, family was not a singular form or structure at all; rather, it was a fluid micro-social community through which people lived and moved. There was no one "traditional" family, but rather many types of families and households, each with its own history ... to explore the demographic context of families in Canada using the 1901 census. Split into five sections, the collection covers such topics as family demography, urban families, the young and old, family and social history, and smaller groups as well. The remarkable plasticity of family and household that Household Counts reveals is of critical importance to our understanding of nation-building in Canada. This collection not only makes an important contribution to family history, but also to the widening intellectual exploration of historical censuses."--Pub. description.

Indigenous peoples around the world have been involved in struggles for decolonization, self-determination, and recognition of their rights, and the Māori of Aotearoa-New Zealand are no exception. Now that nearly 85% of the Māori population have their main place of residence in urban centres, cities have become important sites of affirmation and struggle. Grounded in an ethnography of everyday life in the city of Auckland, Being Maori in the City is an investigation of what being Māori means today. One of the first ethnographic studies of Māori urbanization since the 1970s, this book is based on almost two years of fieldwork, living with Māori families, and more than 250 hours of interviews. In contrast with studies that have focused on indigenous elites and official groups and organizations, Being Māori in the City shines a light on the lives of ordinary individuals and families. Using this approach, Natacha Gagné adroitly underlines how indigenous ways of being are maintained and even strengthened through change and openness to the larger society.
