This work offers a facing-page translation of Alexandro Malaspina's Meditacion sobre lo Bello en la Naturaleza, an Enlightenment-era piece addressing questions of aesthetics in the wake of and in relation to contemporaneous scientific findings and philosophical thought. This work should appeal to scholars interested in philosophy and the history of Enlightenment thought. eighteenth century, and wrote the Meditacion in 1798, while imprisoned for sedition in the fortress of San Anton off La Coruna. His fall, precipitated by the reaction to the politico-economic recommendations he made to the Monarchy on the subject of colonial relations, led to the suppression of most of the results, whether botanical, zoological, ethnographic or gravimetric, of his voyage, and so the loss, until recent times, of a significant voice in Enlightenment thought. silencing of a mind at once broader and deeper than those of his most well-known counterparts Cook and La Perouse, a mind which exercised itself on the philosophical issues of the day from a vantage-point of learning and anthropological experience to which few could lay claim. Malaspina's main topics in this work are questions of aesthetics: does Beauty lie in the eye of the beholder? Is Beauty to be found in Art or in Nature? Does Beauty depend on Utility? He supplements these with Notes on a range of matters, literary, historical and scientific, opening a fascinating window onto his own time.

Self-taught poet Maricela Loaeza has experienced the many facets of love and already knows through her own experiences that love has the ability to transform daily life into a paradise. In Sowing Dreams, Loaeza reveals her soul through lyrical verse, sharing the joys and heartache instigated by the most powerful emotion in the universe. Loaeza relies on an abundance of divine inspiration and discoveries from her own senses as she traces a poetic path through life’s most cherished moments. From the mother who yearns for the son she lost to destiny thirty years ago to the love she feels for the man who fulfills her in every way to the love from a God who forgives her imperfections, Loaeza’s verses inspire us to turn inward and love ourselves as much as we love those around us. Sowing Dreams shares a glimpse into one woman’s heart as her pain, dreams, and love unite to renew her spirit and ignite hope for her future.

A History of Ecology and Environmentalism in Spanish American Literature undertakes a comprehensive ecocritical examination of the region’s literature from the foundational texts of the nineteenth century to the most recent fiction. The book begins with a consideration of the way in which Argentine Domingo Faustino Sarmiento’s views of nature through the lens of the categories of “civilization” and “barbarity” from Facundo (1845) are systematically challenged and revised in the rest of the century. Subsequently, this book develops the argument that a vital part of the cultural critique and aesthetic innovations of Spanish American modernismo involve an ecological challenge to deepening discourses of untamed development from Europe and the United States. In other chapters, many of the well-established titles of regional and indigenista literature are contrasted to counter-traditions within those genres that express aspects of environmental justice, “deep ecology,” the relational role of emotion in nature protectionism and conservationism, even the rights of non-human nature. Finally, the concluding chapters find that the articulation of ecological advocacy in recent fiction is both more explicit than what came before but also impacts the formal elements of literature in unique ways. Textual conventions such as language, imagery, focalization, narrative sequence, metafiction, satire, and parody represent innovations of form that proceed directly from the ethical advocacy of environmentalism. The book concludes with comments about what must follow as a result of the analysis including the revision of canon, the development of literary criticism from novel approaches such as critical animal studies, and the advent of a critical dialogue within the bounds of Spanish American environmentalist literature. A History of Ecology and Environmentalism in Spanish American Literature attempts to develop a sense of the way in which ecological ideas have developed over time in the literature, particularly the way in which many Spanish American texts anticipate several of the ecological discourses that have recently become so central to global culture, current environmentalist thought, and the future of humankind.

. Trans. Edith Moss Jackson The Worthy of My Race: Social Sketches, is a bilingual edition of Jorje Miguel Fords biographies, published in 1899. The United Nations, declaring that 2012 initiates the Decade of the Afrodescendant, encourages the recovery of such texts. This translation broadens readership of the biographies to English speakers, while offering the Spanish text for others desiring the original. Fords difficult style required that the translator render the text with flexibility. Ford selected fourteen Afro-Argentine men as motivational icons for contemporary Afro-Argentine youths who, like the massive waves of European immigrants, were unaware of the Afrodescendants crucial contributions to the nations construction and development. These biographies, with original photographs, document the achievements of Afro-Argentines that challenged the prevailing racialized ideologies of the period.
