Just before the end of the 1990-1991 Gulf War, more than 700 wells in Kuwaiti oil fields were set on fire. Several international companies and scientific organisations were involved in extinguishing the fires and in assessing the impact of this major environmental incursion. Kuwaiti Oil Fires: Regional Environmental Perspectives summarises these effects. The topics covered include the application of remote sensing techniques to determine the location of wells on fire and plume movement; air quality and particulate monitoring by ground stations and aircraft measurements; organic and inorganic constituents in the air; use of modeling techniques to study dispersion characteristics of pollutants and deposition of soot; and the efforts by the fire fighters in extinguishing fires and capping the wells. A brief overview of the causes of the crisis and the role of regional and international groups in resolving the dispute is presented as well as some basic and useful statistics of the region covering general information on economic aspects and exploitation of oil resources in both Iraq and Kuwait. Problems faced by the fire fighting teams, the preparations made to overcome the problems, and technology used in extinguishing the well fires are also discussed. Numerous colour photographs are used to illustrate the problems encountered and the techniques involved in their solution.

While Saddam Hussein's army was retreating from Kuwait in 1991, they set fire to all of the nation's oil wells. Besides stopping Kuwait's oil production, the fires caused environmental damage to the entire region. Thanks to the efforts of Red Adair and many other fearless fire fighters, the blazes were put out several months ahead of schedule.

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the adequacy of a 1991 interagency report on the Kuwait oil fires, focusing on the report's findings that: (1) there was no significant acute health risk from the pollution levels to people with normal respiratory capacity; and (2) more data are needed to determine long-term health risks. GAO found that: (1) the report's findings were reasonable, since the study's scope was limited, the study team qualified its findings and conclusions, and the team recognized the need for more data to determine long-term health risks; (2) additional monitoring indicated that Kuwait's air quality has been within standards except for high particulate levels; and (3) the Army and the Environmental Protection Agency have initiated GAO-endorsed actions to assess long-term health risks.

and used in munitions. Rather the requirements for the agent’s military effects took precedence. In addition, the interaction among the political, technical, and legal challenges connected with the known or possible risks posed by CW agents is complex and sometimes not well understood. This is usually because technical considerations, when acted on, are almost invariably informed by political ones, such as various legal requirements. The book contains nine chapters covering different aspects of the research on environmental consequences of war and its aftermath and covers in one additional chapter more general issues such as prevention of war and its environmental c- sequences, the legal, political, and technical background to selected environmental and human health effects of CW agents, and the atmospheric transport and depo- tion of persistent organic pollutants under warfare conditions to more specific ones related to two main tragic examples: the war in the Balkans and the Gulf War. Aspects of the war in the Balkans cover contamination by heavy metals in Serbian national parks, the impact of NATO strikes on the Danube river basin, and the problems associated with transuranium elements. The Gulf War in Kuwait covers other problems related to the impact of oil contamination, the impact on grou- water resources, and the soil damage of ground fortifications among other envir- mental and health problems.
