About the Book Book One of Ekphrases is the third book of poetry by Saad Ali. It’s the first installment in his anthology of ekphrases. On this occasion, the poems are born out of Ali’s interpretations of the artworks (paintings) of various Western (European and American) artists—from past and present. The poems are not merely descriptions or elaborations of the themes, messages, subjects and objects of and in the paintings, but rather his poetic discourse is much more engaging in that it is an embodiment of the stories within stories of human stories—manifesting as the consequence of an interaction between (the minds of) a philosopher-poet and an artist. Also, the main components of Ali’s poetic discourse i.e. contemplation and satire become prominent—embodying reflections on the fundamental questions of why, what, how, when, where, and who vis-à-vis existence and being (in general) and, more specifically, the human condition(s). Here, the instances of the phenomena of love, hate, fear, courage, nostalgia, remorse, redemption et cetera have been invoked—even at the subjective level. As always, the book is an invitation to all for both an individual and a collective contemplative and reflective odyssey. So that we may be able to interpret and comprehend the intricacies and niceties of existence and human life in a better (and/or different) way.

These twenty tales have been drawn from famous legends concerning the former lives of the Buddha. Beloved by children and adults alike, they tell of people and animals moved to acts of sacrifice by the noble example of their fellow creatures. The flavor is often suggestive of Aesop, as are the lessons that are so subtly and keenly conveyed. Presented in a simplified narrative, the tales maintain the magical and timeless beauty of their Far Eastern origins. The stories are ideal for reading to children, as they tell of highly dramatic adventures that are resolved by non-violent and compassionate means. Challenging circumstances bring forth courage and the capacity to love, opening the way to solutions against seemingly impossible odds. This book will also be coveted for its exquisite illustrations by the well-known illustrator H. Willebeek Le Mair.

In spring 1996, Saint Joseph's University hosted the exhibition "The Holy Family as Prototype of the Civilization of Love: Images from the Viceregal Americas," which commemorated the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Feast of the Holy Family to the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church. The exhibition displayed paintings from the Spanish Colonial period, rare books and engravings from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, and lithographs and devotional paintings on tin from nineteenth-century Mexico and New Mexico. Culled from private collections, galleries in Miami, New York, Washington D.C., and institutional collections of several Catholic universities, these art works offered a visual chronicle of the evolution of devotion to the Holy Family.
