Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Media History, grade: College, Moi University (Peace Institute), course: Communications-Media History, language: English, abstract: Politics the world over, and probably in all history, has always fed on incessant lies and half truths. However, the proliferation of the mass “media media-social media” convergence has engendered an explosive and domineering twist. This falls into what some thinkers now refer to as the “post-truth” era, revealing an historical angle to the pertinent subject matter. According to the Oxford dictionary “Post-truth” denote “circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” It is herein acknowledged that even though post-truth concept got its initial impetus from the US’ Nixonian Watergate scandal of the early 1970s, it climaxed during the 2016 Trump and Brexit campaigns, and now its synthesis blooms globally. The objective of the paper is to put the idea of post-truth into Kenyan perspective, construing the media-politics nexus there from. To achieve this, a history of colonial and post colonial systems of lies- “political-metamendacity matrix” PMM) is traced. It is established that the current wave of political lies in Kenya is a product of the very foundations of the state edifice, not only exacerbated by contemporary information implosion but also the myriad digital opportunities. The paper brings Kenya into the ongoing global conversation on the existence, meaning and ramification of the “post-truth.”

This book examines the existing counter-terrorism laws and practices in the six-member East African Community (EAC) as it applies to a range of law enforcement and military activities under various international legal obligations. Dr. Christopher E. Bailey provides a comparative examination of existing national law for EAC countries, including compliance with obligations under international human rights and international humanitarian law, and offers a range of legal reform recommendations. This book addresses two primary, related research questions: To what extent do the current national counter-terrorism laws and practices of the EAC Partner States comply with existing international human rights safeguards? What laws or practices can the EAC adopt to achieve better compliance with human rights safeguards in both civilian and military counter-terrorism operations?

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Terrorism is a common contemporary phenomenon and no nation, great or not, can boast of being free of, or immune to, it. The only thing which distinguished States, on matters terrorism, is their degree of susceptibility to terror attacks i.e. the frequency with which they experience terrorism and the impact/severity of these experiences. All of us have experienced terrorism, be it directly or indirectly, and so know a thing or two on this is important, even if only for engaging in constructive deliberations on the subject. The project seeks to establish whether Kenya is a terror hotbed, or not; and If it is, then why or rather, what makes it one; but on the other hand, if it is not, then what is it and better yet, why is it not. I intend to accomplish this fete by conducting a critical study of terrorism in Kenya, a first for the nation if I may add. Unlike traditional methods of studying terrorism, critical terrorism studies is a research orientation that is willing to challenge dominant knowledge and understandings of terrorism, is sensitive to the politics of labeling in the terrorism field, is transparent about its own values and political standpoints, adheres to a set of responsible research ethics, and is committed to a broadly defined notion of emancipation. By adhering to the two most essential epistemological perspectives of critical terrorism studies i.e. critical realism and reflectivism, the project makes references to historical sources, relies on facts, and analyzes hard data in a bid to reveal the underlying socio–economic and political realities, within seemingly neutral knowledge, that have long informed acts of terrorism in Kenya.

This book offers insights into changes brought about by the enormous growth of the internet. There are new ways to share cultural heritage materials through online finding aids, exhibits, and other initiatives. What has been accomplished across libraries, archives, and museums? The authors consider that question by using case studies to explore activities in 14 libraries, archives, museums, and other heritage organizations. They consider what we can learn from current collaborations within and across libraries, archives, and museums and why some collaborations are successful while others cannot be sustained. Their findings are based on observations and interviews at institutions and organizations in the United States, Australia, and the U.K. These organizations have worked to make their collections accessible. Some have simply digitized their collections, while others have enhanced their collection management systems. Others have incorporated digital asset management systems to organize and retrieve media, and to manage digital rights and permissions. Most of these institutions and organizations have succeeded through strategic partnerships, strategic planning, and insightful leadership. However, the book also contains examples of institutions that have undergone transitions: one of the museums closed, and another closed its library. Taken together, the fourteen institutions shed light on professional practices today.

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical guide to cyber law – the law affecting information and communication technology (ICT) – in Kenya covers every aspect of the subject, including intellectual property rights in the ICT sector, relevant competition rules, drafting and negotiating ICT-related contracts, electronic transactions, privacy issues, and computer crime. Lawyers who handle transnational matters will appreciate the detailed explanation of specific characteristics of practice and procedure. Following a general introduction, the book assembles its information and guidance in seven main areas of practice: the regulatory framework of the electronic communications market; software protection, legal protection of databases or chips, and other intellectual property matters; contracts with regard to software licensing and network services, with special attention to case law in this area; rules with regard to electronic evidence, regulation of electronic signatures, electronic banking, and electronic commerce; specific laws and regulations with respect to the liability of network operators and service providers and related product liability; protection of individual persons in the context of the processing of personal data and confidentiality; and the application of substantive criminal law in the area of ICT. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable time-saving tool for business and legal professionals alike. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Kenya will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative law in this relatively new and challenging field.
