Excerpt from Kemptville, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia: An Historical Sketch These years embraced the introduction of the school law of 1864, providing for the support of schools by compulsory assessment, which was the beginning of a new era in the educational history of the Province. Besides the provisions for the general support of schools the law authorized a special grant, called a Superior School grant, to be award ed to four, at most, of the best schools in each of the several counties of the Province. This school merited and obtained this extra grant for the few years it was available. Included in the enrollment of pupils in this school at different terms were a number from several other places in the County.
