'It's a little book of wonder, it's fantastic' Chris Evans 'A fabulously sparky, wide-ranging and horizon-broadening little study ... joyously unboring' Sunday Times Friends do it, strangers do it and so do chimpanzees - and it's not just deeply embedded in our history and culture, it may even be written in our DNA. The humble handshake, it turns out, has a rich and surprising history. So let's join palaeoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi as she embarks on a funny and fascinating voyage of discovery - from the handshake's origins (at least seven million years ago) all the way to its sudden disappearance in March 2020. Drawing on new research, anthropological insights and first-hand experience, she'll reveal how this most friendly of gestures has played a role in everything from meetings with uncontacted tribes to political assassinations - and what it tells us about the enduring power of human contact. Because the story of the handshake ... is far from over.

Maria Carbella Buenotanco y Valderama, a descendant of a Spanish missionary and a Malay warrior, who died a Christian, has inherited a vast fortune in landholdings and treasures of the East. But even her vaunted wealth and reputed beauty could not hide the truth of her scandalous background. When the parents of Florendo Medrano denounce his betrothal to 19-year old Carbella, whose mother refuses to grant consent, the lovers are forced to join two revolutions. Married under the seal of the Philippine Revolutionary Republic and in the belief that only the triumph of both revolutions can validate his nuptial, Florendo defies the American authorities even after orders to lay down arms are proclaimed throughout the Archipelago. Convicted of treason, only one person can save Florendo; the American officer, whose burning desire is to possess for himself the love and affection of his wife. Restored to his high social status after one of the witnesses detracts his damning testimony, he begins to dream of building a commercial empire. After amnesty is declared for all political prisoners, Don Florendo advocates statehood for the Philippines, unaware of the growing closeness between his wife and the dashing Major Stewart McQueen. Can love triumph over desire when all odds are against it?

After a history of funding environmentally costly megaprojects, the World Bank now claims that it is trying to become a leading force for sustainable development. For more than a decade, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and grassroots movements have formed transnational coalitions to reform the World Bank and the governments that it funds. The Struggle for Accountability assesses the efforts of these groups to make the World Bank more publicly accountable. The book is organized into four parts. Part I describes the NGOs and grassroots movements that are the book's central focus. Part II presents case studies of four projects that provoked the emergence of transnational advocacy coalitions: Indonesia's Kedung Ombo dam, the Mt. Apo geothermal plant in the Philippines, Brazil's Planaforo Amazon development project, and the remarkable campaign of Ecuador's indigenous people to influence national economic policy that led to their participation in the design of a development loan. Part III looks at the origins and politics of reform in four areas of broader World Bank policy: the rights of indigenous peoples, involuntary resettlement, water resources, and the World Bank's institutional reforms that are supposed to encourage public accountability. In the last section, the editors discuss issues of accountability within transnational coalitions and assess the impact of advocacy campaigns on World Bank projects and policies. Contributors L. David Brown, Jane G. Covey, Jonathan A. Fox, Andrew Gray, Margaret E. Keck, Deborah Moore, Antoinette Royo, Augustinus Rumansara, Leonard Sklar, Kay Treakle, Lori Udall, David A. Wirth.

Who were your forbears? What sort of humans were we? What kind of world have we moved about? How as a family have we lived and how have we interacted with people around us? The contents of this book will very likely be of immense value to two or more generations down the line, specifically the grandchildren of our grandchildren, in the same manner as I, at this moment, would pay a price to see and learn how our forbears of past two or more generations lived within the context indicated above.
