In 1964 the Lake Kariba Fisheries Research Institute (LKFRI) was created in Kariba, Rhodesia as a United Nations Development Program Project, and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAD) in cooperation with the Governments of Rhodesia and Zambia. Dr. A. G. COCHE took charge of the Limnological Section and conducted research on the entire lake between January 1965 and January 1966. In 1966 the Central Fisheries Research Institute (CFRI) was created in Chilanga, Zambia by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and National Parks. It was also supported by a UNDP Project executed by FAD. Between 1967 and 1971 Dr. E. K. BALON & Dr. A. G. COCHE were in charge of the Sections of Ichthyobiology and of Limnology respectively. The results of their FAD research activities on Lake Kariba are united in this volume. In the first part A. G. COCHE presents a limnological synthesis. In the second part E. K. BALON studies in detail the fish production and succession. The views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily coincide with those of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Where natural resources are a key component of the rural economy, the ability of the poor to realize their visions for the future depends significantly on institutional structures that govern resource access and management. This case study reports on an initiative on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zambia, where lakeshore residents face competition over fishing, tourism, and commercial aquaculture. Multistakeholder dialogue produced agreements with investors and increased accountability of state agencies and traditional leaders, enabling communities to have greater influence over their futures through improvements in aquatic resource governance. The report documents the rationale for the approach followed and steps in the capacity-building process, discusses obstacles encountered, and identifies lessons for policymakers and practitioners seeking to implement a similar approach.

The daughter of a river god, raised by a human father and bound to a tragic destiny. An African fantasy-adventure graphic novel inspired by the mythology of the Zambezi River and the history of the Kariba Dam, one of the largest dams ever constructed. Siku has always called the Zambezi River her home. She understands the water - and strangely enough, it seems to understand her, too, bending to her will and coming to her aid in times of need. But things are changing on the river - a great dam is being built, displacing thousands of Shonga people - and things are changing in Siku, too, as her ability to manipulate water grows out of control, and visions of a great serpent pull her further from reality and her loving father, Tongai. When Tongai ventures to the Kariba Dam to find a cure for Siku and never returns, she sets off to find him with the help of Amedeo, the young son of Kariba's chief engineer. Together, they traverse elephant graveyards, rugged jungles, and ancient ruins, outrunning pirates, bootleggers, and shape-shifting prophets ready to use Siku to their own advantage. But Siku soon discovers that her father has been shielding a terrible secret: Siku is actually the daughter of the Great River Spirit, Nyaminyami, and the only way to bring about the necessary rumuko - a ritual which has brought balance to the Zambezi for centuries - is for Siku to give up the only life she's ever known. With the future of the Shonga resting on her shoulders, Siku must journey to the source of the river to understand the ancient power hidden within her.

Beautifully illustrated in colour, this new series of pocket guides are more than where and how-to books, although they all give essential information for travellers. They provide a wealth of concise information on the areas they cover, giving a chapter in each book on the subject's geology, paleontology, archaeology, climate and history. Bvumba is the beautifully mountaineous region of eastern Zimbabwe. Sections include the flora and fauna, botanical gardens, golf, walks and drives. The Hwange guide covers the National Park, mammals, birds, trees and shrubs, reptiles, and butterflies; and also has a checklist for mammals, birds, trees and shrubs. The guide to Kariba tells the story of Operation Noah, the rescue of the animals when the lake was damned; and there is a section of Matusadona National Park, on the southern side of the Lake. There are sections also on mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, butterflies and insects, and checklists on mammals, birds, trees and shrubs.

'Modernisation' was one of the most pervasive ideologies of the twentieth century. Focusing on a case study of the Kariba Dam in central-southern Africa and based on an array of primary sources and interviews the book provides a nuanced understanding of development in the turbulent late 1950s, a time when most colonies moved towards independence.
