In its brief existence of about four years, between 1971 and 1975, ?The Motherland?, edited by K.R. Malkani (1921-2003) achieved rare distinction and recognition in the world of journalism. It established itself as a fearless and uninhibited voice of the nation, relentlessly exposing the decay seeping into India’s body-politic by the early 1970s. In that respect ?The Motherland’s? advocacy of ?India First? and its unalloyed articulation of India’s national interest remain unsurpassed. It was also its strident and uncompromising criticism of the Indira Congress and the Prime Minister’s ways, which eventually led Indira Gandhi to shut it down at the first given opportunity after she imposed the Emergency. ?The Motherland? was, “The only paper in India to announce on 26th June the imposition of the Emergency, arrest of leaders and the wave of national shock.” This collection of K.R.Malkani’s columns in ?The Motherland? offers an insight into Indian politics and society in the years just before Emergency was imposed by Indira Gandhi. It is a record of India’s political history a quarter century after independence and is a very useful reckoner for the general reader for understanding the years that led to the imposition of the Emergency.

"Written during the 1910s, 20s and 30s, these articles offer a wistful and nostalgic image of the waning years of the Austro-Hungarian empire, with portraits of the Habsburgs, culminating in first-hand reports in 1916, from Vienna on the funeral of Emperor Francis Joseph I, and from Budapest on the coronation of Charles IV, the last king of Hungary. Krudy's reports follow the bloodless democratic revolution of 1918, the Karolyi government and the short-lived Soviet Republic, and present cameos of the leading political figures of the day such as Ferenc Kossuth, Mihaly Karolyi and Bela Kun."--Jacket.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Triatomics for Space Observation

Infrared Spectroscopy of Triatomics for Space Observation

This book is dedicated to the application of the different theoretical models described in Volume 1 to identify the near-, mid- and far-infrared spectra of linear and nonlinear triatomic molecules in gaseous phase or subjected to environmental constraints, useful for the study of environmental sciences, planetology and astrophysics. The Van Vleck contact transformation method, described in Volume 1, is applied in the calculation and analysis of IR transitions between vibration–rotation energy levels. The extended Lakhlifi–Dahoo substitution model is used in the framework of Liouville’s formalism and the line profiles of triatomic molecules and their isotopologues subjected to environmental constraints are calculated by applying the cumulant expansion. The applications presented in this book show how interactions at the molecular level modify the infrared spectra of triatomics trapped in a nano-cage (substitution site of a rare gas matrix, clathrate, fullerene, zeolite) or adsorbed on a surface, and how these interactions may be used to identify the characteristics of the perturbing environment.

This application-orientated collection of formulas has been written by applied scientists and industrial engineers for design professionals and students who work in engineering acoustics. It is subdivided into the most important fields of applied acoustics, each dealing with a well-defined type of problem. It provides easy and rapid access to profound and comprehensive information. In order to keep the text as concise as possible, the derivation of a formula is described as briefly as possible and the reader is referred to the original source. Besides the formulas, useful principles and computational procedures are given.

Handbook of Preservatives

Handbook of Preservatives

Genre: Chemical preservatives
ISBN: 1890595667

This handbook contains comprehensive information on more than 5000 trade names and generic chemicals and materials that are used in a broad range of formulations to prevent the contamination and decomposition of end products. Product degradation can be caused by exposure to oxygen, ozone, bacteria, molds, yeast, mildew, and fungi. The industries that depend on the proper selection of preserving chemicals and materials are diverse and include: plastics, elastomers, construction, paper/pulp, agriculture, textiles, paints and coatings, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food, beverages. This handbook contains comprehensive information on a variety of preservatives available from major chemical manufacturers and can expedite the material selection process for chemists, formulators and purchasing agents by providing the answers to these questions:? Is the agent capable of inhibiting the detrimental effects of oxygen, ozone, or microbes to the extent necessary?? Is the agent's overall physical and chemical attributes compatible with the product or system being protected?? Can the agent remain stable under storage conditions and for the application requirements?? Is its safety in production and handling acceptable?? Does its level of toxicity meet environmental regulations?? Does it meet cost requirements?
