The publication of the Encyclopedia of Religion in the South in 1984 signaled the rise in the scholarly interest in the study of Religion in the South. Religion has always been part of the cultural heritage of that region, but scholarly investigation had been sporadic. Since the original publication of the ERS, however, the South has changed significantly in that Christianity is no longer the primary religion observed. Other religions like Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism have begun to have very important voices in Southern life. This one-volume reference, the only one of its kind, takes this expansion into consideration by updating older relevant articles and by adding new ones. After more than 20 years, the only reference book in the field of the Religion in the South has been totally revised and updated. Each article has been updated and bibliography has been expanded. The ERS has also been expanded to include more than sixty new articles on Religion in the South. New articles have been added on such topics as Elvis Presley, Appalachian Music, Buddhism, Bill Clinton, Jerry Falwell, Fannie Lou Hamer, Zora Neale Hurston, Stonewall Jackson, Popular Religion, Pat Robertson, the PTL, Sports and Religion in the South, theme parks, and much more. This is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the South, religion, or cultural history.

This book is a history, an album, and a collection of the choicest sermons and essays. It is a history of our great leaders who have fought hard and long for Bible principles and doctrines, and by their consecrated, and, in some instances, heroic lives, have shown themselves to be worthy of the title: Pillars of Orthodoxy. The arrangement of the book is such that the reader can study separately the lives of each of these great men and read the specimen sermon or essay without reference to any of the others. Each life sketch is complete in itself, and no one chapter is dependent on another. The life sketch of Richard Fuller, and his great sermon on the "Desire of All Nations," for instance, is a complete chapter to itself, without reference to anything else in the book. This feature enables the busy reader to read a, chapter at a time, and there is nothing lost by the long intervals between his opportunities to read. In a book where one chapter is directly connected with another, much is lost by failing to read straight through. The last chapter can be read first in this book and nothing will be lost by it. It is always a pleasure to look into the face of a great man. There is something elevating about it. The pictures of these men, "who seem to be pillars" (Galatians 2:9), are the very best that can be obtained. The reader, therefore, while he studies the life, may look into the faces of these men who have made so much glorious history. By that means these pillars of orthodoxy will seem to be old friends, and it will make their life work seem more real. It can be safely assumed that the sermons and essays, published as specimens in this book, are the best that have ever been published. Some of them are published here for the first time, while others have been published and have become famous. It is a pleasure to present to the public a volume containing the very cream of the best thought from the strongest men in the Baptist denomination.

Where can one find true freedom? Not only the liberty from inconveniences, difficulties, and suffering, but the power and ability to actually do what you know you should. Granted, the truth will make you free, but how does it make you free? Is there some divine process? If so, what does it look like in the reality of everyday life? The answers to these questions were the impetus which motivated Alan Browne's life-long search. He was positive the Bible held the solutions to his pressing concerns. However, he was just as certain he didn't know how to apply the ancient words to his contemporary problems. Everyday circumstances gnawed at him, such as the fear of meeting his monthly financial obligations, the frustration of waiting in line at the local market, and especially his anxiety regarding the relationship of his precious daughter and her boyfriend. These issues kept Alan tied in knots. Not with the tangible means of ropes or chains, but with the intangible fears and desires within his heart. "Freedom Within You" is the remarkable journey of Alan and Annalisa Browne as they navigate life's often unexpected situations. Through a most surprising source, they gradually discover the keys that unlock and open their prison cells. It is truly a marvelous story, every bit as real as your own. With this second book in The rojocci Papers series, R. J. Graves, Jr. transitions from the crust of the pie into the fruit of a deeper slice of God's goodness. If his first book, "Hidden Within You," was the appetizer, then "Freedom Within You," is the main course, presented with plenty of humor, compassion, and intrigue. Join Alan and Annalisa as they experience the highs, lows, joys, and sorrows of life this side of heaven, on what they have aptly described as their, "Adventure with God."
