Excerpt from Journal of the Eighty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Massachusetts: Held in St. Paul's Church, Boston, May 17 and 18, 1876; With an Appendix Early this spring the Church was called to mourn over its loss, and to bless God for a good example, as the venerable Bishop Johns Of Virginia was bidden to enter into the joy of his Lord. He was a man Of Singular purity and sincerity, firm in his own convictions, but kindly towards others who differed with him, loyal and true in the administration of his own Diocese, wise and loving in his acts and counsels for and with the general Church. Just one week after our last Council closed, the Rev. Edwin B. Chase passed from us, after a long and painful illness, to his ever lasting reward. And last October his uncle, the Rev. Moses B. Chase, a venerable, meek, and saintly man, followed him. The former was full of holy activity and fruitful in good works until the relentless disease seized him, at St. Peter's, Cambridge, two years before. That Church and Parish is his monument, and blessed, fragrant memories will for a long time keep it decorated with better than leafy and floral decorations. His end was peace and his works do follow him. The other and aged man Of God was one who was a shock of corn fully ripe, and we could only bless God for a heavenly-minded Old age, a spotless record, work well done, and an abundant entrance into the eternal mansions.
