Excerpt from Journal of a Tour in Italy, in the Year 1821: With a Description of Gibraltar, Accompanied With Several Engravings The Author has chiefly to apprehend the criticism of those who have travelled in the country of which he writes; as they may reasonably look for subjects of a higher nature than the details of every day occur remoes. For travellers, however, the, work was not designed; but for those who have no personal ac quaintance with Italy, and who, after havmg gathered from other sources the history of the antiquities, arts, and sciences of that interesting country, are dis-f posed to enter a little into the examination of things in common life. Persons of this description may look upon this book as a mere journal, m which many old subjects are brought up again to view, but usually among circumstances m which they have appeared but once, and then to the eyes of the author. Hehas at tempted to preserve some portion of their original dis tincness and interest. If he has not succeeded, he must confess that the fault will lie neither with his readers, nor with the scenes and objects themselves; but ln the inadequacy of his language - the feebleness of his pen. Excerpt from Journal of a Tour in Italy, in 1850: With an Account of an Interview With the Pope, at the Vatican The Tour in Italy, of which an account is given in the following pages, was begun and completed, and the narrative itself, with the exception of a few sentences, was written, long before the promulgation of the late unscriptural, absurd, and insolent bull of the Pope, whom I visited at the Vatican. I could not be aware, that three years ago the plan of dividing England into dioceses, as if we were either a Heathen or a Popish country, could have been imagined, much less acted upon. Excerpt from Journal of a Tour: Made in the Years 1828 1829, Through Styria, Carniola, and Italy, Whilst Accompanying the Late Sir Humphry Davy The following pages were originally intended for the perusal only of my own family and immediate friends. Some of these now persuade me to lay them before the public, believing that, to it, a detail of circumstances connected, as my Journal necessarily is, with the last recreations and pursuits of the late Sir Humphry Davy, must be interesting. Excerpt from Something of Italy The present volume is only what it purports to be, Something, not much, about italy - just those glances at the country, its people, and usages which were casually obtained during a three months' excursion in the spring and summer of 1862, along with such observations as are suggested by the hopeful progress of those portions of the Italian peninsula lately nationalised, as well as by the dismal backwardness of those other parts - Rome and Venetia - still under an antiquated and relentless thraldom. The illustrations are chie y from photographs, in the prepara tion of which the Italians sustain their reputation for artistic excellence. It has to be added, that the substance of the volume appeared as detached papers in the Journal with which the. Excerpt from The Journal of Montaigne's Travels in Italy by Way of Switzerland and Germany in 1580 and 1581, Vol. 2 of 3 They chattered in the very choir of the church, standing with their hats on, and turning their backs to the altar, and recking naught of the office except at the time of elevation. There were an organ and violins, which gave musical accompaniment to the mass. We visited other churches, but saw nothing noteworthy, either in the ornaments or in the beauty of the women present. Amongst others we went to the church of Saint George, where the Germans have left divers marks of their presence and several coats-of-arms, together with an inscription relating how certain German noblemen in the train of the Emperor Maximilian, what time he came to take Verona from the Venetians, placed a certain piece of work over one of the altars. M. de Montaigne remarked that the government here preserved the memory of its reverses, as it also preserved in their integrity the beautiful tombs of the ill-starred Scaligers.
