Celebrated for his work in the philosophy of education and acknowledged as a leading proponent of American pragmatism, John Dewey might have had more of a reputation for his philosophy of logic had Bertrand Russell not so fervidly attacked him on the subject. This book does much to disple the old canard that John Dewey was guilty of "scientism" and a reverent worship of technological progress. Indeed, Dewey predated the Frankfurt school in his warnings about the dangers inherent in a machine culture. Thomas Alexander shows that the primary, guiding concern of Dewey's philosophy is his theory of aesthetic experience. He directly challenges those critics, most notably Stephen Pepper and Benedetto Croce, who argued that this area is the least consistent part of Dewey's thought.
