The old storyteller tells how he met a speaking kangaroo, and how this kangaroo and its friends showed him and the young people with him the magical world the kangaroos live in, where the visitors saw how the kangaroos built their homes in the trees and caves. They learnt how the kangaroos are able to weave cane baskets as well as many other things made out of cane. They were shown the kangaroos’ magical silkworms that give silk of many different colours: this the kangaroos use to make fabrics. There were also ‘tree roos’ who fly through the trees like magic, and another group of renegade and bloodthirsty kangaroos hell-bent on killing peaceful kangaroos and taking over and then killing all humans. The visitors also learnt of a threat to the magical rain forest by logging companies. The old storyteller tells of magical ceremonies and the tales the kangaroos tell of their past. The old man and the young people must help the kangaroos save their forest and battle against the bloodthirsty kangaroos.

Sundown sends the silent kangaroo shooter, Roo, to explore the possibility of resettling their community in the safety of the Flinders Ranges. But when they arrive, they encounter a foe even more dangerous than the Revelationist terrorists. Meanwhile in Adelaide, the 'house rats' have found the only way to survive: forage by night and hide by day. Sergeant Nulla and his band of survivors accidentally set up camp right under the noses of the terrorists. But it is the conflict between the Alice Springs Command, Third Australian Army and Sundown's Commando that sets the path towards either disaster or survival in the harsh Australian outback. This is a standalone novel, and can be enjoyed even if you haven't read other books in the series.

This is another story I wrote for my darling grandchildren, when they holidayed with us on our property overlooking the beautiful Lake, at Lake Boga. They were my inspiration, and the reason I began writing childrens stories.

Winner of the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Poetry and Christopher Brennan Award (for lifetime achievement in poetry) and shortlisted in the Steele Rudd Prize for a collection of short fiction, John Kinsella returns with a not-to-be-missed addition to the canon of one of Australia’s most original and incisive writers. A man who never sleeps takes a cross-continent train journey into landscape and memory. A gregarious woman and a reclusive man move to an Irish village where history and tradition (the famine pit nearby, the festival of Halloween) enact their dark forces. In an Australian town dying from the encroachment of salinity, a young girl attempts to bring life to a dead dog. Whether documenting love or horror, or finding quotidian absurdities in Australia or the world , the powerful stories in Crow’s Breathcapture the precariousness of everything we most value with unsettling tenderness and beauty. ‘Energetic and ruthless. Kinsella’s writing is stunningly good’ Australian Book Review ‘Kinsella knows how to distil stories to their essence’ Herald Sun
