Joe the Neanderthal has a slightly pulp-noir ambiance, but is set in the near future. It centers around Joe Myers, a journeyman rock drummer who, while on the run from his homicidal sister, stumbles into a seaside bar where a reality show about a Jersey rock band is being filmed. He is quickly enlisted to play drums in the project only to discover that one of its members is a rogue scientist intent on tweaking a state-of-the-art robot named Gulf. As Joe embarks on an affair with an emotionally damaged woman, he gradually befriends Gulf as well as a detective who is stalking him. Together they investigate what it means to be human in a dystopian world where the divide between man and machine is on the verge of becoming blurred.

Joe Laing has recently escaped the doomed timeline of Tarmis, in which the Neanderthal race had survived to modern times due to Joe's meddling with their development some 35,000 years in the past. Although he is now happily married to Ciara, Joe is getting restless - he feels compelled to investigate the second of the time tunnels. Ciara, however, insists on accompanying him, despite the potential danger. Assisted by Or-gon, his Neanderthal friend, the only survivor of the erased Tarmis timeline, Joe bridges the chasm blocking the tunnel and, with Ciara by his side, steps into the unknown. They emerge at a place Joe recognises - the complex of living accommodation and laboratories that lies behind the sacred cave of the Neanderthals. Yet now, everything seems new, which means that he and Ciara are deeper into the past than Joe had previously travelled. They are taken prisoner by tall people similar in appearance to Prua Landi, the woman who had tried to destroy Joe in Tarmis. Marron, one of their captors, is unduly suspicious of Joe and Ciara and attempts to question them using telepathic methods forbidden by his people. His companion, Romana, who is a doctor, insists on the prisoners being brought before the base commander, Leiki. He is a friendly, but intense individual, who explains that they are more than 250,000 years into Joe and Ciara's past. Leiki questions Joe and it transpires, to everyone's amazement, that Joe is also the Futama in Leiki's natural time, which is almost one million years into the future. Leiki's people are known as 'The Faithful' because of their unshakeable belief in the coming of the Futama. They have the technology to travel easily through time and have escaped persecution at Prua Landi's hand in their own natural time by fleeing to the past of the early Neanderthal people. They have built the tunnel complex, but their main refuge is now on Mars, at a period 300 million years in the past, when Mars is covered with oceans and forests and Earth is in the late Carboniferous era. It is to Mars that Joe must travel, because there he must train an army to free the Faithful from Prua Landi's evil regime. He must do this because he is their Futama. Because of the potential danger, Joe insists that he take Ciara home. But, by means of inferior time travel technology Prua Landi has followed him to the 21st century and, if she cannot recruit him, then she intends to kill him. Leiki has assigned Analy and Trione as Joe's bodyguards and they are forced to use their deadly plasma weapons to defend him against an attack by Prua Landi. In the resultant explosion, Joe's house is almost destroyed and Prua Landi escapes back to her own time in the most freakish of circumstances. However, she is severely burned, and it takes prompt action by her doctors and her internal nanomedics to save her. Her narrow escape from death increases Prua Landi's determination to destroy Joe, whom she now suspects is the fabled Futama, the one the Faithful believe, despite his primitive origins, is destined to end her regime. On Mars, having experienced the destructive power of plasma weapons, Joe decides that he must develop tactics to minimise death and devastation amongst his people of the future. To this end he trains an army in various martial arts, allied to a rigorous fitness regime. When at last Joe is satisfied at the levels of skill and fitness shown by his troops, he knows the time has come for the final assault to free his people . . . and bring Prua Landi to justice.

An exceptionally haunting memoir that also shows us what it is to be really human. In a hardware store, Joe sits on a display toilet amidst the throng of customers and wees, smiling serenely. He thumps crying babies. He is amazed when the car he runs in front of actually hits him. Joe is ten and mentally disabled. He's funny, fascinating and maddening, and this memoir tells his moving story, but also argues that until we know Joe's life, we can't understand our own. Through philosophy, psychology and medical research, the author explains how we are mind-readers, how we make sense of other people and how we understand guilt and innocence, and shows that Joe sets our humanity in sharp relief. But in that case, is Joe part of it? The author who asks that outrageous question is Joe's father.

The Hardy brothers must dismantle a dangerous crime gang in this first book of a fresh approach to a classic series. Teenagers Frank and Joe Hardy are supposedly “retired” from their detective work. But there is a new mystery in Bayport that needs their investigative expertise—and fast! Starting with a bank heist, a series of alarming pranks have popped up around Bayport. Ultimately harmless, the pranks turn out to be the work of Seth Diller, an amateur filmmaker who plans to make “zillions” from his reality-horror flick, which he’ll use to help out his brother, a wounded Marine. But after the Hardy brothers put a stop to the Panic Project, there is a new outbreak of Seth-like pranks—only these have definite victims. All signs point to evidence of a crime gang in Bayport, and Frank and Joe undertake the most dangerous investigation they’ve ever encountered. It’s up to them to save their town—and themselves—before the Red Arrow gets to them first.

"Among the fifty or so Texan survivors of the siege of the Alamo was Joe, the personal slave of Lt. Col. William Barret Travis. First interrogated by Santa Anna, Joe was allowed to depart (along with Susana Dickinson) and eventually made his way to the seat of the revolutionary government at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Joe was then returned to the Travis estate in Columbia, Texas, near the coast. He escaped in 1837 and was never captured. Ron J. Jackson and Lee White have meticulously researched plantation ledgers, journals, memoirs, slave narratives, ship logs, newspapers, personal letters, and court documents to fill in the gaps of Joe's story. "Joe, the Slave Who Became an Alamo Legend" provides not only a recovered biography of an individual lost to history, but also offers a fresh vantage point from which to view the events of the Texas Revolution"--

This groundbreaking feminist classic dismantles the way we view rape in our culture and replaces it with a genuine understanding and respect for female sexual pleasure. In the original edition, feminist, political, and activist writers alike presented their ideas for a paradigm shift from the "No Means No" model--and the result was the groundbreaking shift to today's affirmative consent model ("Yes Means Yes," as coined by this book). With a timely new introduction, refreshed cover, and the timeless contributions of authors from Kate Harding to Jill Filipovic, Yes Means Yes brings to the table a dazzling variety of perspectives and experiences focused on the theory that educating all people to value female sexuality and pleasure leads to viewing women differently, and ending rape. Yes Means Yes has radical and far-reaching effects: from teaching men to treat women as collaborators and not conquests, encouraging men and women that women can enjoy sex instead of being shamed for it, and ultimately, that our children can inherit a world where rape is rare and swiftly punished.
